Lyn Brown MP on Cladding Scandal in West Ham (and elsewhere)

West Ham MP Lyn Brown "tells it as it is" on the completely inadequate government response to this scandal.

My view is that it is not just dangerous cladding but the post Grenfell cladding investigations have also found widespread shoddy and unsafe building defects in so many new homes.

The Government sets the regulations and building safety laws, if they fail then they should either make sure that the shoddy builders and/or their insurers pay or they government should compensate for their regulatory failure.

The building regulator won’t come a moment too soon, and must be rigorous without compromise understanding the science of construction, mindful of the profiteering motives of those in the construction supply chain.

Architects have known of the danger and winced for well over a decade now, with most client procurement methods powerless to steer the purchase of non combustible mineral insulation in place of combustible PIR & EPS plastics.

The building regulator proposed by the Hackett report won’t come a moment too soon, and must be rigorous in its insight and understanding of building science, conscious of the profiteering motives of all involved in procurement.

Architects have understood and have winced for well over a decade now, knowing that most procurement contracts used by local authorities allow the contractor free rein to select combustible PIR & EPS plastics in place of non combustible mineral insulation. That’s where regulation and enforcement of fire prevention science is essential for us all.

Agreed need for Building regulator with clout asap. But who is going to pay to put all this right is key.
