UNISON Community (Housing Associations & Voluntary Sector) NEC Members 2023-25

Yesterday was the UNISON National Labour Link Committee meeting at the UNISON Centre in London. Both myself and Denise are members of the UNISON NEC for Community (the 80,000 members who work for Housing Associations and the Voluntary Sector).

We were both elected by Labour supporting members of the NEC to the National Labour Link Committee.

Denise is a care worker who works for a national charity supporting disabled adults, while I work for a large Housing Association. It is absolutely imperative to both of us that a Labour Government is elected at the next general election. No if's or but's.

We will be contacting all UNISON branches we have contact details for who have Community members, with details of future surgeries and NEC reports. Check out our joint Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/JohnandDenise4CommunityNEC/

Newham Council Homeless Street Count Jan 24

Last week at midnight (00.01 24.1.24) I joined Newham Councillors, outreach workers and officers to take part in the bi-monthly Street Count of homeless residents sleeping outdoors.

We met up at Newham Dockside building beforehand, had a briefing and were divided in teams of two - a driver and lead.  We all had patches within Newham where it was believed we may find people sleeping outdoors (rough sleeping). A team was already out early to deal with an emergency.

I went with Cllr Jane Lofthouse and we toured parts of East Ham checking out known "hot spots". We came across two people sleeping in office doorways. The weather was not as cold as it has been the last few week but it had been raining beforehand and it was very windy (end of "Storm Jocelyn").

One was asleep but the other was awake and we able to have a chat and take some details so outreach workers will come down and see him in the early morning. Hopefully, they will be able to take him off the streets and help him find more suitable accommodation.

After dropping off Jane at home and the documentation at Dockside, I was home for 2am. Will update on what the other teams found when I get the data.

UPDATE:  Not on this Newham count but this report about biggest increase in rough sleeping late last year in London is alarming.

100 years of Labour achievement: 1924-2024

"January 2024 is the 100th anniversary of the first ever Labour government.

In the election the previous month, Labour secured its best result up until that point, pushing the Liberals into third. The Conservatives failed to get an overall majority and Labour, tacitly supported by the Liberals, formed a minority government.

The men and women who formed Labour’s government included many of the greats who had led Labour in its first quarter-century. Ramsay MacDonald was Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary, Arthur Henderson the Home Secretary and Philip Snowden Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The election had also seen the election of the first three female Labour MPs: Margaret Bondfield, Dorothy Jewson and Susan Lawrence. Bondfield would later become the first female cabinet minister and the first woman to be a privy counsellor in the UK.

Although the first Labour government only lasted nine months, it achieved much, including the Wheatley Housing Act that saw half a million council homes built over the next decade. Labour also planned new and improved schools, improved pensions and benefits, and laid the foundations for the extension of voting rights to millions more.

Perhaps its greatest achievement was lasting as long as it did, brought down in the end by dirty tricks and lies in the press. Labour had proved it could be a party of government, competent in office and achieving results for working people. The political landscape in Britain had changed forever.

Since 1924, Labour governments have been beacons of progress and social justice. Through times of struggle, of conflict, of economic depression, it has been Labour that has fought for working people here and around the world. A Century of Progress". https://labour.org.uk/about-us/labours-legacy/a-century-of-progress-1924-2024/

Canning Town's hidden history: pioneering good homes for all (Newham Voices)

Reading this months "Newham Voices" (early via subscription) I did not realise that Newham had been a test bed for Parker Morris space standards on new build Council properties. There are many problems with properties built during this period but the size and living space of those built to Parker Morris standards is amazing. These decent homes standards was ended by the Tories in 1980 quelle surprise.

Well done to Eastside Community Heritage for this project.

Did it: London Winter Charity Walk. 26 Miles (42 Kilometres) 8 hours 25 minutes

Finished. 26 miles (42 kilometres) 8 hours 25 mins. Very sore feet and legs, but it's been a great day. Raised money for a good cause (St Mungo's Homeless charity) , improved my fitness a bit and it has reminded me what a beautiful city I live in.

Started at the Oval Cricket club 10am, walked along south bank towards Rotherhithe, back to Tower Bridge, crossed to north of Thames and walked west until Vauxhall Bridge. Had lunch at Oval then walked west along south of Thames and then crossed Putney Bridge. Walked East alongside Thames (in darkness) until Vauxhall then back to Oval for 6.25pm.

Listening to music and podcasts took my mind off the aches and pain.

Over 30 of my colleagues from Clarion took part and also 2 Newham Councillors, Cllr Kamali and Cllr Chadha.

Many thanks to staff from the organisers https://www.ultrachallenge.com/london-winter-walk/ for looking after us so well.

Will I do next year? Maybe, but see how much pain I will be in tomorrow and the next few days. I will post more photos on Facebook.

You can still sponsor me. Many thanks for all those who have donated so far. https://www.justgiving.com/page/john-gray-1702669640623

Less than 4 days to go before 26 Mile Homeless Charity walk in London

My wife Gill describes me looking like a condemned man in this photo!

Now wishing that I had trained more and sorted out my walking gear earlier but it is too late now to do much about these things.

I did a 10 mile walk from home to Chingford during the weekend which left me feeling a little sore the next day (it was very muddy) so what I will be like this Sunday after 26 miles?

We start (team of 35 from Clarion Housing) 10am on Saturday 27 January at the Oval Cricket club for the 26 Mile route which goes around the River Thames from Putney to Rotherhithe finishing again at the Oval. There about 4000 walkers in total taking part during the weekend.

I hope to walk around 3mph so it should take just over 8 hours (with another 30 minutes in breaks).

Wish we luck and if you can sponsor me please do at this "JustGiving" site. St Mungo's is a National Homeless charity, which as a housing officer, I have seen first hand do some great work in supporting vulnerable clients.

Online Stewards Training for the Community and Voluntary Sector

February 2024

(NB you should get paid release to attend this course if UNISON is the recognised trade union with your employer. If not recognised then still ask. Any problems speak to your branch)

This course has been designed for newly elected and less experienced UNISON stewards who work in the Community and Voluntary Sector. It consists of two parts: Stage 1 is the initial training and will help equip you with organising skills. Stage 2 focuses on developing representation skills.

Stewards are a vital link in the union chain and have an important role to play in organising members at local level.

UNISON’s ability to support and represent its members with their employer is very much dependent upon the strength of membership organisation. The union is more likely to be get good results where it has strong membership organisation. Strong membership organisation is based on sound organising principles:working collectively – “what can we do about it together?” rather than “leave it with me to sort it out”
  • listening to members’ views
  • knowing where our members are
  • actively involving our members
  • promoting democracy and membership participation.
This course also equips stewards when supporting members in resolving individual issues and includes identifying what is and isn’t a case, practise interviewing a member, and preparing for a grievance and disciplinary case. By the end of the course you should feel confident in carrying out your duties as a steward.

In order to apply you must be able to access MS Teams and to commit to attending all four days as follows:

Tuesday 6th February 9.30am to 4.30pm
Tuesday 13th February 9.30am t0 4.30pm
Tuesday 20th February 9.30am to 4.30pm
Tuesday 27th February 09.30 to 4.30pm

In order to apply for a place please complete and submit the following form:

"Landmark case win as Newham Council’s campaign against Rogue Landlords achieves major milestone"

Well done to Newham Enforcement officers and Cabinet lead Cllr Shaban Mohammed. More please, more. Need to make sure this "landlord" does not find ways to try and get around "ban".

Hat tip @letsandleases via @NewhamBooker

Newham Council win’s appeal case against rogue landlord convicted of seven housing offences in Newham;
• National banning order upheld by court marks a major milestone in the Council’s campaign against rogue landlords;
• Council accelerates work to protect Newham residents living in private rented sector.

Newham Council wins’ landmark case against convicted rogue landlord as court dismisses his appeal against a Banning Order following breaches of the Council’s landlord licensing scheme by renting an unlicensed property in Newham. The ban means that he is banned from renting any properties in Newham and the rest of England for three-years.

Convicted of seven offences under the Housing Act 2004, private landlord Mr Jahangir Hussain had originally failed to licence his property in Forest Gate in October 2021, which he used as a house in multiple occupancy (HMO). As well as breaching six other HMO Management Regulations, he received a fine of £10,000 plus the Council legal costs.

In February 2023, the Council successfully applied for a Banning Order against the landlord. Despite an appeal by the landlord, the Council won the case on 6 December 2023 and the Banning Order preventing Mr Hussain from renting any properties in England will now be in place for three years starting from 16 August 2023.

Councillor Shaban Mohammed, Cabinet Member for Housing Services said: “This Banning Order is a first for Newham and a landmark case in our campaign against rogue landlord and to protect the rights of Newham residents living in the private rented sector. We mean what we say, when tackling the scourge of rouge landlords who think they are above the law.

They aren’t and we’ll track down any landlord who tries to circumvent the rules that are there to protect our residents and their housing rights. We have very clear guidelines, information and support available for private landlords in Newham so that they can operate their businesses while also supporting the welfare of their tenants.

Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE said, “Mr Hussain has shown flagrant disregard of both housing and planning legislation, to the detriment of both his tenants and residents of the borough. Combined actions from across our Council shows that we are will do whatever it takes to protect the interests of our residents. This major milestone sends a message loud and clear that rogue landlords have no place in Newham. It’s all part of our campaign to protect renters rights, including calling for an end to no-fault evictions and introducing rent caps.”

Following the Banning Order, Mr Hussain who rents out several properties in Newham, Tower Hamlets and Haringey will be unable to do so for three years.

The Banning Order also prevents Mr Hussain from:

  • Letting housing in England;
  • Engaging in English letting agency work;
  • Engaging in English property management work; or
  • Doing two or more of those things
  • Being involved in any way in any corporate body that carries out any of the above activities.

As well as obtaining the Banning Order, Newham’s Planning Enforcement Team secured two convictions in the Magistrates Court against Mr Hussain for breaching planning enforcement notices at both his properties within Newham. The notices related to the construction of extensions at those properties without the required planning permission. The cases have now been committed to the Crown Court under section 70 of the Proceeds of Crime Act, for consideration of confiscation and appropriate sentencing for the offences.

Protect the right to strike as the Tories act to axe workers’ rights

Join the TUC-organised march and rally in Cheltenham on 27 January

(hat tip UNISON - I cannot attend due to clash https://www.justgiving.com/page/john-gray-1702669640623)

Forty years ago, GCHQ workers were banned from joining a trade union. Twenty-seven years ago they won back that right. Today, the Conservative government is attempting to restrict the right to strike for over five million workers.

Last year, it introduced the Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Act, which stipulates that when workers in certain sectors vote to take legal strike action, they could be forced back to work and sacked if they do not comply.

The TUC is organising a march and rally to celebrate union history, protest against this government and stand up for the right to strike.

UNISON is supporting the rally, which will take place in Cheltenham – the home of GCHQ – on Saturday 27 January and is urging members and branches to attend.

The march will gather from noon and set off at 12:30pm and will be finished by 4pm.

UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea will be among the speakers. Last year, giving her opinion on the when the bill was announced, she said: “Draconian and undemocratic measures are about to be imposed by a government that has spent over a decade creating the situation we’re in now.

“High inflation, a pay crisis in our public sector, the NHS on its knees, and an economic outlook as grim as the constant sleaze that flows out of Whitehall. This bill will do nothing to change any of that, and we must be part of the campaign to defeat it.”

Organisers welcome trade union banners, but are asking that no inflatables are taken to the event.

Chorleywood to Chesham walk: Chilterns Society

Today Gill and I had another marvellous walk courtesy of the Chilterns Society  8 miles linear walk from Chorleywood to Chesham. We took the Lizzie line from Forest Gate, changed at Liverpool Street for metropolitan line all the way to Chorleywood. About 1 hour and 30 minutes in total.  It is amazing you can get into the heart of the countryside on the London underground.

Started off with yummy breakfast and coffee at the Rootv cafe onroute in Chorleywood. Lot of ups and downs but nothing too strenuous. A mixture of woods, hill tops and lots of lovely ancient green lanes.

Some great views, especially over the Chess Valley. Cold but dry. We passed Latimer House, which was used during World War 2 to hold high ranking German officers, whose private conversations were "bugged" by British intelligence and the information used by codebreakers at Bletchley Park.

The walk was surprising quiet with very few other walkers. Definitely worth doing again, maybe go the opposite way, perhaps in the spring for the bluebells.

The journey back went smoothly but back home I went out again and did a few more miles around Forest Gate in training for my 26 mile London Winter Walk at the end of the month in aid of Homeless Charity St Mungos.

My knees were a little sore at the end of the day today so not sure what they will be like after 26 miles!

I will post more photos of today on Facebook

West Ham ward New Year Canvass and Street Surgery

This morning we had our first canvass and street surgery of 2024 in our ward. We met at the ATL cafe then went to doorknock and speak to residents with my Councillor ward colleagues, Charlene and John. Also, we had Lewis (Green Street West Councillor, our sister ward), Ash and Varghese (West Ham ward members).

It was pretty successful, over 50 contacts and we came across some important case work. Mostly housing issues but also complaints by residents against a charity who have leased a local community centre but appear not to have opened it recently.

I had one difficult conversation with a resident who was against Sadiq and the Council over the introduction of emission charges. I tried to point out that we must stop gassing our children and our elderly but he was not convinced. Nor did he accept the argument put forward by a UNISON colleague of mine, who is a paramedic in central London, that 25% of his emergency "shouts" involving taking children to A&E is about breathing difficulties but it is only 5% in the countryside surrounding London.

I was really pleased to see the new build in Arthingworth Street (which had been dis-used since at least 2010 when I first became a Councillor) and that the memorial to PC Nina Mackay, who had been killed there in the line of duty, had been restored. Top right is a picture of the 3 of us in the new garden area.

Exploring the Elizabeth Line: Brentwood to Harold Wood Walk

Today Gill and I tested out a walk in a new book "Exploring the Elizabeth Line" by Jeff Lock. The new Cross London East to West ("Lizzie") rail line from Shenfield to Reading has been a boom for commuters and travellers (but so far somewhat unreliable).

This walking guide book lists 23 walks from "Lizzie" rail stations. Today we did walk 12 "Brentwood to Harold Wood via Tylers Common".  Only 5.5 miles (we also did do about a mile extra to avoid mud). A lovely walk. Went past the headquarters of Fords Cars UK (bottom left) and next door the Essex Regiment Church (top right).

We stopped off for lunch at the Upminster Garden Centre (recommended). Some road noise from M25 but mostly very quiet and peaceful. No rain!!!

Looking forward to the next 22 walks.

When we got home, I went out for more walking around the mean streets of Forest Gate to train for my 26 Mile London Winter walk at the end of the month. Goggle fit and Zepp life estimate that I have walked 13 plus miles today, which is means that my walk preparation is so far going to plan.

High Pay Day 2024

Hat tip High Pay Centre and brilliant cartoon which I cannot remember source.

"We have estimated that FTSE 100 CEOs’ earnings for 2024 will surpass the median UK worker’s full time annual salary today, just before 1pm on Thursday 4 January.

FTSE 100 bosses’ will have to work one hour fewer to overtake UK median worker than they did in 2023

Top city lawyers will have to wait until the beginning of next week to surpass the median worker’s annual pay, while leading bankers will have to wait until 17th January
Calculations based on most recent available figures for CEOs and other top professions, plus Government data on UK workers’ pay

According to our calculations, median FTSE 100 CEO’s earnings for 2024 will surpass the median annual salary for a full-time worker in the UK by around 1pm on Thursday 4 January.

The calculations are based on our analysis of the most recent CEO pay disclosures published in companies’ annual reports, combined with government statistics showing pay levels across the UK economy.

As with last year, the executive pay data suggests that CEOs will have to wait until the third working day of 2024 to surpass the annual pay of the median worker.

Median FTSE 100 CEO pay (excluding pension) currently stands at £3.81 million, 109 times the median full time worker’s pay of £34,963. This represents an 9.5% increase on median CEO pay levels as of March 2023, while the median worker’s pay has increased by 6%.

The figures come against a backdrop of calls from leading figures in the city and big business for UK CEOs to be paid more. In December 2023 Legal and General Investment Management adjusted their executive pay guidelines to permit firms they invest in to offer more generous incentive payments, while earlier in the year the London Stock Exchange Chief Executive argued that low CEO pay levels create a risk to the UK economy.

How other top earners compare

We have used other publicly available data to estimate how long it would take other top earners to surpass the median UK worker’s full time earnings.

Other FTSE 350 executives (comprised of FTSE 100 executives other than the CEO, plus CEOs and other executives of FTSE 250 companies), median pay £1.32m, will need to work until 10th January for their pay to overtake the annual pay of the median UK worker

A partner at a ‘magic circle’ law firm, average pay £1.92m, would need to work until 8th January

A partner at a ‘Big Four’ Accountancy firm, average pay £871k, would need to work until 16th January

A top banker (so-called ‘material risk taker’) at one of the five FTSE 100 listed banks, average pay £807k, would need to work until 16th January

Everyone in the top 1% of full time UK earners, making at least £145k, will have overtaken the annual pay of the median full time worker by 29th March

The research has been covered widely in the media including by the BBC, the Guardian, the Independent, the Daily Mail, the Sun and the Mirror."

RISHI'S RAW DEAL -Pay £10 more tax and get £2 off

Poster campaign launched today in Wellingborough where Labour candidate, Gen Kitchen is campaigning to replace disgraced Tory MP, Peter Bone.

Hat tip Independent "From Saturday, the main rate of national insurance will be cut by two percentage points to 10%, as promised by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt in the autumn statement in November.

Ministers have previously said cutting the main rate for employees is a tax cut worth £450 for the average employee on £35,400 in 2024/25.

But Labour point out that income tax and national insurance thresholds, which have been frozen since 2021, mean that many families have been drawn into higher tax bands.

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves said: “Under Rishi Sunak’s raw deal, for every extra £10 people are paying in tax they are only getting £2 back.

“Working people know that this month’s tax con is just a cynical giveaway from a weak and out-of-touch Tory government that is desperate to cling onto power, rather than a credible plan to fix our broken economy".

Countdown to London 26 Mile Winter Walk 2024 - 24/25 days training days to go

I am taking part in a sponsored 26 mile walking marathon at the end of this month for the homelessness charity St Mungos with colleagues from work.

Most of the recent holiday was spent walking in the Peak district which was good cross training but I only averaged around 13500 steps per day. For the 26 mile walking marathon I will have to complete around 55,000 steps. It should take between 6-8 hours of walking at a reasonable fast pace.

I am trying to go out walking 3 times a day (early morning, lunch and evening) for short walks and plan longer ones in the weekends. Listening to BBC sounds on my headphones or making telephone calls is a great way to get some walking practice.

Yesterday evening I went to Westfields to check out suitable walking footwear but could not find anything I like, so I might take part in my normal sports shoes but I think I will need more cushioning for concrete/tarmac.

I am raising money via this Just Giving Page. Please consider sponsoring me if you can.

Blog "Let’s make 2024 a success - Vote in our service group elections and celebrate UNISON’s Year of LGBT+ Workers" Christina McAnea

"Happy New Year to everyone in UNISON and here’s to a successful year for you and your families.

I have high hopes for 2024 – 12 months of campaigning for UNISON’s Year of LGBT+ workers and for a national care service, securing pay deals across all public services and a general election that will push the chaotic Tories out of Westminster and bring in a new government.

A new government is a must for our members and for our public services. Our NHS, schools, local councils and emergency services are on their knees and stuck in a state of crisis. The current government’s legacy is one of slashing jobs, squeezing budgets, and falling living standards for millions of working people. We need a Labour government that will rebuild our public services, put workers first with a new deal for working people and create a national care service.

Campaigning for that change in government will be a big part of our mission this year, but we won’t let election fever take over our daily task of fighting for our members’ pay and conditions. Day in, day out, our activists and organisers are supporting members in workplaces across the UK, and our teams in head office are mounting legal challenges, influencing politicians, preparing campaigns and helping members when they need us most.

We’ll also be celebrating our Year of LGBT+ workers in UNISON style – continuing to be loud and proud against homophobia and transphobia, and ensuring that UNISON always remains the best trade union for LGBT+ public service workers.

And later this year, there’s something that every working member can get involved with. From 22 April to 17 May, voting will be open for your representatives on UNISON’s service group executives (SGEs) – the lay leaders who decide on campaigns, pay claims, strike ballots and industrial action. Ahead of that member ballot, from next Monday (8 January) until 9 February, branches can nominate their preferred candidates.

Our SGEs are so important in UNISON. They’re powerful groups of activists that keep UNISON with you throughout your working life, campaigning for fair pay and conditions, safe and healthy working conditions, job security, work-life balance, equal pay and against discrimination.

So if you want some more new year’s resolutions, here’s two for you – have your say in UNISON’s SGE elections and get involved in our Year of LGBT+ workers activities that will be taking place throughout 2024.

From everyone in UNISON, we hope you have a happy, healthy and successful 2024".

"E7 Now and then" relaunch (& today is 133th Anniversary of the deaths of 26 Boys at Forest Gate Workhouse)

The Forest Gate, (Newham, London) local history site "E7-Now and then" is being relaunched after a 5 year gap. Which is really good news for people like me who live in Forest Gate and is fascinated by all history. Until I read about it in the site I had no idea that the British Union of Fascists had an office and headquarters 200m away from me nor that 26 boys had died in a fire in a workhouse nearby caused by official negligence.

But anyone interested in history would find something to look at in this site. There is already over 200 articles.

John Walker is the author/publisher of the site and he has also written a very moving book about the deaths of the boys in workhouse - and the pretty dreadful conditions children endured there for over 70 years. check out :-

"Out of Sight, Out of Mind - Abuse, Neglect and Fire in a London Children's Workhouse, 1854-1907 https://www.newhambooks.co.uk/ ISBN 978-1-7399142-0-2.

We had hoped to mark the anniversary today (fire took place 1 January 1890) as we did in 2021 https://www.johnslabourblog.org/2021/01/an-awful-new-year-day-calamity.html but it didn't happen but maybe next year.
