Newham For Change Social

Picture from Saturday. We didn't win the referendum on ending the Mayoral model in Newham but we came close
  • for the directly elected mayor: 45,960 (56%)
  • for the committee system: 36,424 (44%)

However, this was the first proper summer social I had been to since 2019 and it was great to meet people again at such a lovely venue to eat, drink (and most importantly - gossip!).

Some of us will be launching a new campaigning group on promoting democracy in local government. We will also offer help and assistance to those opposed with the attempt to bring in an executive Mayoral model in Croydon Council during their referendum in October.

Unreported Deaths - Covid_19 cases in UK Food Processing Plants

A damning report by PIRC here into the failure of many UK food processing plants (the UK's biggest manufacturing sector) to properly report the deaths of their workers from Covid_19 to the Health & Safety Executive and to take effective action to protect them.

Private sector pension trustees and Local Government Pension committees (and boards) ought to be pressing their fund managers and advisors to be taking this issue seriously. The reputational and legal risk to investors is potentially huge.

It is about time the "S" in ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) is taken as seriously as "Environment" and "Governance".

We have the term "#GreenWashing" to describe the prentence by some fund managers and advisors that they take Environmental issues seriously.

What can we call those who don't take any real notice of #social issues?

West Ham CLP fundraiser with Richard Burgon MP Thursday 10 May

Post-election CLP fundraiser/social Thursday 10th May 2018

Dear John
Many, many thanks to all the West Ham CLP members who came out to get all sixty of our Labour councillors elected in Newham last Thursday as well as our Mayoral candidate Rokhsana Fiaz who was elected with 73.4% of the vote.

As for those members who also campaigned in nearby marginal wards, the Labour party can be proud that we achieved the best local election results in London since 1971, as well as making gains nationwide.

Join us to celebrate/recover/socialise and raise a little money for the party on Thursday 10th May at 7pm for a CLP fundraiser.

Shadow Justice Secretary, Richard Burgon MP, will be joining us to reflect on the outcome of the elections, locally and nationally.  Richard is one of the best speakers on the Labour front bench and we are delighted he is visiting the CLP.

Details about time and venue below:

Thursday 10th May, from 7pm

Eat 16 Cafe, 89 Tarling Road, Canning Town, London E16 1HN

Please bring some food and drink.
We look forward to seeing you there,
West Ham CLP

PS - Crowd-funding for a second conference delegate closes tomorrow! West Ham CLP agreed that if we can crowd-fund the money, we will send a second delegate to Labour party conference. If you want to donate but haven't yet, please follow this link to the crowd-funding site where you can pledge an amount to support this project. If sufficient funds are raised the delegate will be elected at the General Committee meeting on Thursday 24th May. The crowd-funding concludes on Thursday 10th May.

Newham Crew at Labour Party Conference 2015 #Lab15

Picture from the traditional Conference social for members of West Ham and East Ham Labour Party members on Monday evening.

While I have no doubt this picture will now reappear in various Newham based blogs with helpful captions and comments I am sure that it will all be in the spirit of "Kinder Politics".
