Getting out the Labour Postal vote in West Ham, Plaistow & Canning Town

Yesterday I spent the morning in West Ham ward with our local MP, Lyn Brown, my colleague Cllr Charlene Mclean (and our super young pioneer) and our top activist Varghese .

We were calling at all Labour supporters who are postal voters to remind them to fill out their 3 votes for:-

  1. Sadiq Khan as London Mayor,
  2. Unmesh Desai as local City & East London Assembly member and
  3. Labour - for the List candidates.

It was a lovely warm, spring day day so many residents were out and the contact rate was not great but Labour support was pretty solid.

In the afternoon, Lyn and I joined Plaistow West & Canning East ward Councillors John Morris & Simon Rush with local activist Veronica. We were later joined by my UNISON colleague and Hackney Wick Councillor, Joseph Ogundemuren.

Again, many residents were out but very firm support for Sadiq and Labour from those who were in.

Register to vote online if you you are not registered by 11.59pm 16 April 2024 https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote . It usually takes only 5 minutes.

Applications to have a postal vote have to be by this Wednesday 17/4/24 by 5pm https://www.newham.gov.uk/council/vote-post

My UNISON Branch officer Labour Link report - 2022 AGM

Last week was my branch AGM (UNISON Greater London Housing Associations) where I was re-elected unopposed as an executive committee member and Labour Link Officer. Below is my written report to the AGM (obviously pre the fascist Putin invasion of Ukraine)

"Notwithstanding bungled COVID restrictions and corrupt PPE procurement, the brazen lies and cheating over COVID parties, by Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his ministers, has shown us, once and for all, that the Tories are unfit to govern this country.

Even if Boris goes, the Tories will remain in power until we can defeat them in the ballot box.

The next big electoral test will be the Council elections in May 2022. We must give the Tories a hammering in these elections. In May last year branch activists campaigned for Labour in the London Mayor and GLA elections. Our branch Executive, Lolo Oyesusi, was the Labour candidate for the Kent Police Crime Commissioner and got the highest ever Labour vote for that position.

I will be organising branch Labour Link “door to door” and telecanvass campaign sessions for members to take part in and support Labour candidates. A number of our branch members will also be standing as Labour candidates, who will be asking for your support.

In the meanwhile, the best thing you can do if you want to support Labour is to register for a postal vote (contact your local council or click here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/apply-for-a-postal-vote) and encourage your friends and families to do so.

After the elections in May, I hope to organise another branch Labour Link AGM and social in the House of Commons.

Please contact me if you want any further information on UNISON and its Labour Link.

John Gray"

Register to Vote & for a Postal Vole - online (by 18 April)

(Hat tip Labour Party. Register to vote by April 17.Register for a postal vote by April 18)

"John, in just a couple of weeks thousands of us will vote in local elections.

When we vote we can can transform this country. When we vote we can send an unmistakable message to Theresa May and the Tories that change is coming.

But all kinds of things can get in the way of making it out to vote on election day — it could be work, caring for our families, a holiday, an illness or disability.

If this sounds familiar, or if you're not sure you will be around on 3 May, why not register to vote by post? We've made it really simple for you to do with a brand new online tool.

Just fill in the online form, print it out, and we'll tell you exactly where to send it. But be quick — you've only got until 18 April.

And if you think you know someone who might not be able to make it to their polling station when local elections take place on 3 May — then share this online tool with them before it's too late.

Our movement is a movement determined to give a voice to everyone — up and down this country — that needs to finally be heard. From the nurse earning too little to get by, to the university student unsure if they will ever find a career or own their own home.

While Theresa May's Tories would rather not reach out, our Labour values mean we refuse not to. Let's prove that by making sure everyone gets the opportunity to vote in local elections.

Thank you to all who have supported the campaign so far. We've spoken to thousands of local people, making the case for Labour, and against the BNP. And we've delivered hundreds of thousands of leaflets and direct mails.

Please join us from 10am - 4.30pm.

- Saturday 24th April. - 26 Bromhall Road.

- Turn left out of Becontree Tube station (District Line), then left again along Rugby Road, a 5 minute walk on the right you'll find Bromhall Road.

- We'll provide lunch and refreshments.  There's plenty of leafleting to do if you'd prefer.

Any questions, please call 07576 323 109.

All the best, Margaret"
