Vote Lyn Brown - Your Labour Candidate for West Ham (& what to do on election day)

I have been the election agent for Lyn since 2010 (now the 4th time) and below are some responses to enquires I have had previously on General Election polling day
  • Check out West Ham Labour website if you want to help Lyn out today
  • Polling stations are open 7am -10pm and if you are in a queue at 10pm you will still be allowed to vote.
  • If you do not know where your polling station is check https://action.labour.org.uk/page/content/polling-station-finder
  • Ring 020 8470 3463 if any Labour supporters in West Ham needs a lift to their polling station.
  • If you have not posted your postal vote you can still hand it into any West Ham polling station before 10pm.
  • If you have not registered to vote - it is now too late.
  • You cannot vote by telephone or internet
  • You do not have to speak to any canvassers outside the polling station. By all means take any literature they offer.
  • If they ask you on the way out how you have voted you do not have to tell them but it will probably stop them having supporters knock on your door later to remind you to vote,
  • You do not need your polling card or ID - it makes things slightly quicker if you have your polling card but all the Council officers need who run the polling station is your name and address.
  • It normally only takes a matter of minutes to vote. You give your details, you are given a ballot paper and are shown to a private booth, pencils are supplied, you mark a single X against the candidate or Party you prefer, you fold the ballot paper and put it in the box.
  • Job done.  Remember your vote is completely private.
also don't forget when deciding to vote :-

LABOUR’S HOUSING POLICIES – A DOORSTEP GUIDE

LHG has produced a Guide to Labour’s housing policies, summarising the key policies in the 2019 Manifesto to talk about on the doorstep.
Housing is at the top of the manifesto conversation in the media. Make sure you know what we are saying we will do!
The Guide also runs through how the Tories have made the “broken housing market” much worse, both in coalition with the Lib Dems and on their own account since 2015.
We’re aiming to help improve the lives of everyone with a housing need:
  • young people stuck in private rented homes, paying exorbitant rents, having to move every 6 months or year, and facing landlords who don’t maintain their properties
  • families moving from one private rented home to another, with no stability for their children and no hope of a secure, affordable, council or Housing Association home
  • leaseholders having to pay through the nose for ground rents
  • anyone facing homelessness
  • people in high rise tower blocks worried about fire safety in their homes
  • families who are anxious about where their children will be able to afford to live when they grow up
  • first-time buyers wanting low cost homes so they can stay near their work and families
  • those wanting to live in environmentally sustainable homes
Please take the Guide out with you on the doorstep – and share it around your Labour friends. Labour’s housing policies are vote winners for everyone!

Labour vows to “put bad landlords out of business”

"Labour has vowed to “put bad landlords out of business” with fresh plans for housing that will see private sector renters offered new rights and a national ‘property MOT’ introduced.
Announcing the set of policies on Monday, Jeremy Corbyn and John Healey will explain that a Labour government would require landlords to complete an independent annual inspection.
The move would ensure homes meet a decent standard, with “dodgy landlords” having to pay tough fines of up to £100,000 for a single offence and even repay rent to tenants if the let property is sub-standard or rules are broken.
Landlords would need to possess a valid ‘MOT’ before letting out a home. The inspections would be conducted independently, with local councils acting as enforcement authorities.
The Labour leader and Shadow Housing Secretary are also expected to outline how they want to empower tenants and local authorities with a new ‘charter of renters’ rights’.
The charter will be based on the following:
  • The right to an affordable rented home.
  • The right to a secure rented home.
  • The right to a decent rented home.
“Labour will be on the side of tenants and take on dodgy landlords who have been given free rein for too long,” Corbyn commented. “Real change means taking on those who exploit the housing crisis to charge eye-watering rents for substandard accommodation.
“Labour will put power in the hands of tenants with our new charter of renters’ rights, a cap on private rents and funding for renters unions to support tenants to organise and defend their right to safe and secure housing.”
To make private rented sector homes more affordable, Labour intends to cap rents with inflation and – as called for by London mayor Sadiq Khan – give additional powers to cities that could implement further rent controls.
Local housing allowance rates, used to determine the amount of housing benefit or Universal Credit housing element received by tenants renting from private landlords, would also increase under Labour’s plans.
To boost security for both tenants and landlords who want to let their properties long-term, Labour favours open-ended tenancies. These limit the reasons for which a tenant can be evicted to non-payment of rent or criminal behaviour in the property, for example.
Labour would scrap ‘Section 21’ notices, known as ‘no fault’ evictions, which the Conservative Party has also included in its manifesto after Theresa May announced the proposed abolition in April.
To be considered “decent”, homes should meet the current statutory minimum standard for housing, be in a reasonable state of repair, have reasonably modern facilities and services, and provide a reasonable degree of thermal comfort.
Healey, Labour’s housing spokesperson, said: “The power imbalance in the private rental market is at the heart of our housing crisis, with rents eating up too much of people’s pay, tenants afraid of eviction if they report problems, and families with children forced to uproot their lives at short notice.
“Many landlords provide decent homes that tenants are happy with, but the Conservatives have gifted rogue landlords the freedom to flourish. Labour will put bad landlords out of business.
“Labour will legislate in year one for a new charter of renters’ rights, with open-ended tenancies, new minimum standards and rent controls to make renting more affordable. We will make private renting a better option for all.”
According to new research by Labour, tenants collectively pay over £10bn a year in rent to landlords letting out sub-standard homes. A quarter of private rented homes are classed as ‘non-decent’, which means they are damp, cold, in disrepair or unsafe to live in.
One in four families with children now rent privately, Labour has found, and 1.7 million private renters pay more than a third of their income in rents. The private rented sector has grown by over one million households since the Tories took power in 2010".

Emeli Sandé - You Are Not Alone

The highlight performer at this evening's launch of Labour's "Art for All" charter at the Stratford Theatre Royal must be Emeli Sande "You are not alone". A beautiful song sung wonderfully.

Jeremy Corbyn recited some of its lyrics in his speech at the end of the launch.

West Ham on tour in 2 Cities

Photos from campaigning in Cities and Westminster yesterday. A large number of West Hammers came to the 2pm session (see middle right) together with Newham Mayor, Rokhsana Fiaz.

A somewhat frustrating canvass since so many gated blocks of flats with only access via door entry.  But we had some interesting conversations with residents and gained valuable data (for and against).

NHS staff work one million hours of overtime.

Under the Tories, NHS staff work one million hours of unpaid overtime every week.
The Tories can't be trusted with the NHS.

Go to the Marginals!

Hat tip Andy Diagram for a great map of London marginals. In West Ham we have a Labour majority of 36,754 votes. In 2017 our fantastic Labour candidate, Lyn Brown, got 76.7% of the vote.

While we will be campaigning in West Ham, we need to win in the marginals to form a Labour Government.

West Ham (and Newham) desperately needs a Labour Government. So please check out the list of marginals below and go and support.

We have been tasked in West Ham to support the nearby marginal of Cities & Westminster. While it is good to target all marginals, it makes sense that we concentrate on one marginal, where we can build relationships with the local party and learn what are the important local issues. The more you go to a particular marginal, the more that you will know that particular area and how to get into the difficult to enter blocks (and not get hopelessly lost as I have done many a time in a new area).

I was really pleased to see today that the Labour Party telephone banking software operation is now back on line. So we can arrange tele-canvass sessions targeting marginals from inside Newham (and members can ring from home). Watch this space.

Not Just Brexit: Let's put public services first: register to vote

"One month from now, we'll be going to the polls. We'll elect a new parliament and maybe even a government that will be there until May 2025. While we're still going for growth in November to make our voice stronger, we're also starting to gear up for the election.

So we’ve produced an activists' guide to campaigning in the general election, which can be downloaded below. Two printed versions are also being sent to each branch. There’s also a general election poster for members (pdf only) and a postcard for members – 10,000 copies of the postcard are being sent to each region in England and Wales and more can be ordered from shop.unison.site."

Dave Prentis: "This election is the fight of our lives"

Hat tip UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis blog: "Election day is less than five weeks away – and this election is the fight of our lives. After a decade of Tory austerity, public service workers know better than anyone the terrible toll that austerity has had on our communities, the services you provide and on your own lives.
That’s why I’ve been getting out on the doorstep and campaigning for public services – and for a Labour government. So far I’ve been supporting Labour candidates, and UNISON members, Bambos Charalambous and Emma Whysall, and I’ll be out campaigning across the country in the weeks ahead. It really is vital that everyone who wants to see a Labour government gets out on the doorstep and campaigns for Labour – and tells their friends, family and colleagues why they’re voting Labour too. Whilst Boris Johnson may have the money and the media on his side, Labour has something stronger – people.
There’s something else Labour has though – common sense ideas that can changes our country – and the lives of UNISON members – for the better. So it was great to see Labour announcing plans to extend maternity leave, offer real help on childcare and rebuild vital sure start centres. The same goes for giving every family the chance to have a warm home and an affordable energy bill. We have the oldest and most poorly insulated houses in Europe and we need practical measures to address this. Again – this is just the sort of change our country needs.
I know that in the days and weeks ahead, Labour can win this election where it counts – both on the streets, and by showing it has the best plans for working people. I promise you our union will be playing our part – and so will I".

Canvass Training: "Persuasive Conversations"

"Thirty percent of people are undecided about who to vote for or do not think that voting is worthwhile.

Having a persuasive conversation with them about Labour Party policies can make all the difference. Marginal seats are often won or lost by just a few votes.

Would you like to join a training session to learn how to canvass or to learn some useful techniques? I attended a training session on Persuasive Conversations and found it really useful.

I would like to pass on those notes and tips to any interested members and supporters.

Please email tinamjgATicloudDOTcom to register or to find out more".

TRAINING DATES

Thursday 14th November, 7.15pm – 8.15pm
St. Lukes Community Centre, 89 Tarling Rd, E16 1HN
All members and friends welcome"

West Ham on tour: Peterborough, Hull, Cities & Westminster and Chipping Barnet

This morning West Ham Labour members met up outside Stratford Station to go to the launch rally of Labour candidate, Gordon Nardell QC, in the Cities and Westminster seat. This was a packed rally with guest speakers, Shami Chakrabarti and Kier Starmer.

The Labour Party has asked West Ham to support Cities and Westminster in the General election and our Chair of West Ham CLP estimates that we had about 25 of our members attending the rally and the canvass afterwards.

After the canvass I went to the "Big Unions Campaign" launch with West Hammer UNISON member Mumtaz Khan, in Chipping Barnet, of trade union lawyer, Emma Whysall, who only lost out by just over 300 votes in the 2017 General election.

Our UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis, was there as well as London Mayor, Sadiq Khan. After this rally I went on a UNISON canvass team with our General secretary, Assistant General Secretary, National Labour officers and National Chair of Young Labour, Miriam Mirwitch. We got absolutely soaked but had a successful canvass in (believe it or not) "Union Street"!

My last call was to a resident who was a traditional Labour supporter who felt very torn about who to support this time. However, she was so impressed that the Party had turned up on her doorstep on such a wet and horrible day that she was willing to give us the benefit of doubt and vote for Emma.

Result!

Our West Ham Labour Candidate, Lyn Brown, had also been out "on the knocker" supporting Labour candidates in Hull and Peterborough.
