Labour wins the 2024 General Election (and West Ham & Beckton)

This photo is from 5:19 am this morning after James Asser was declared Labour MP for West Ham & Bow. I had been his agent and want to thank the brilliant team supporting him at the Count and the fantastic activists who had been banging the drum for Labour during the last 6 weeks.

Today has been a very special day in my life with the election of a Labour Government. Rest assured I will post further but currently resting while still smiling every time I see the news.

Eve of Poll Campaigning in West Ham & Beckton for James Asser and a Labour Government

Tomorrow at the polls, vote for our local Labour candidates in Newham & Bow: for West Ham and Beckton for Stratford and Bow for East Ham. Vote Labour everywhere!

Remember that this is about electing a future Government. The only real choice is between a Labour Government or a Tory Government. A vote for any other Party is in my view a vote for the Tories.

Vote Labour for Change - Manifesto Day Canvass in Beckton, East London

This evening I went on a canvass with our Labour by election candidate, Blossom Young and activists in Beckton ward. We went to new build housing developments, owned by social landlords (secure tenants, shared ownership and market rents).

Both Blossom and I work in the sector and we did come across a number of serious housing issues (as do all political canvassers in Newham and elsewhere). To me, it is so important that we get a Labour government elected committed to address the housing crisis and everything else that is so wrong in our broken Britain.

I was really impressed with Blossom handling a couple of difficult conversations on the doorstep. By listening, being honest, polite and respectful, she at the end won over all of them. The canvass itself was overwhelmingly positive for Labour. Residents want a change in Government.

They know that the General election is pretty much a simple choice between Labour and the Tories. In my personal view, a vote for anyone else but Labour is likely to be a vote for the Tories.

Today the Labour Party issued its manifesto which I am wading through but can see lots and lots of great stuff.

Labour Unions shout out for New Deal after telecanvass

This evening I joined trade union colleagues to take part in a telephone canvass session supporting union activists standing for Labour as MPs across the UK. I rang residents of Harrow East where UNISON Member @PrimeshPatel is standing while others rang for Katrina Murray who is standing for Scottish Labour in the Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch Constituency. Other candidates were also being supported.

It was an interesting canvass with lots of phone numbers out of service since so many landlines have now been discontinued by people in favour of their mobiles, however, I had 14 contacts, which was not bad for 2 hours, the vast majority for Labour, even those who had previously voted Conservative.

In general, residents were hugely dissatisfied with the government, who had been in power for the last 14 years and are not delivering a decent NHS, dealing effectively with crime or the cost of living crisis.

They believe it is our turn to govern and they are willing to give Labour a chance to deliver for them.

Let wait and see. Fingers crossed.

Out and about in Royal Docks for Labour: West Ham & Beckton

This evening I joined my West Ham Ward colleague, John Whitworth in Royal Docks ward to canvass with local Councillors, Caroline Adaja and Steve Brayshaw.

Our West Ham & Beckton Labour Parliamentary Candidate, James Asser, was out canvassing with activists in our North Woolwich ward.

I had no "negative" responses during the door knock but I guess that some responses from residents that said they were "undecided" were probably from those who are actually opposed. But I felt (hope?) that while they will not vote Labour it is possible that they will stay at home and not vote. Which in one way is a shame but their choice and a reflection of how dreadful the current Conservative offer is to even their traditional supporters.

On the plus side, we had plenty of positive responses in a part of the borough that some would think is not great for Labour.  A lady came to the door who was celebrating her birthday but wished us well and ensured us that everyone in her family and her friends would be voting Labour - including those who had changed their minds recently.

I also came across a number of residents who had either never voted or had not voted for several years who were genuinely interested in the election process and who were pleased to be canvassed and learn more about how to vote. One young mum who was happy to engage, while also trying to ensure her excited toddler and her cat did not run out of the open front door was so pleased to meet Steve, one of her Councillors, who lives nearby and discuss with him local issues.

Afterwards, John and I joined our colleague Shabs who had just finished his ward canvass at the Canning Town Efes to share their meal platter. A great meal and finish to a long day.

Campaigning for Labour in Canning Town with Labour Candidate, James Asser

I met up with James and some of his team outside Canning Town Library, while they were canvassing local blocks. Other canvass sessions were also going on in Custom House and elsewhere in Newham.

It has been a very busy time recently campaigning and also sorting out the legal paperwork but this should be completed very soon and we can really start the real fight to deliver Newham and the rest of the country from tory misrule.

This is the power of a Labour government.

What a heritage and still lots and lots to do if we get power...
