UNISON newly elected Presidential team 2019/2020

Congratulations to Josie Bird from elected President. Sian Stockham @sian_aber elected Senior Vice President and elected Junior Vice President. Great team!  #UNDC19.

The team were all elected with overwhelming majorities by the newly elected UNISON NEC. Josie was 37 to 23 which is a decisive result.

I am so, so pleased we have such a strong team elected to represent our union which is clearly supported by our lay member NEC.

It was sad to say goodbye to my NEC colleagues (from all sides of the political spectrum) who were not re-elected or were retiring.

Re-elected to UNISON National Executive Council (NEC) for Community Members (who work in Housing Associations & Voluntary Sector)

I was really pleased to learn today that I was re-elected for the 5th time, with my best result yet, as a UNISON National Executive Council (NEC) Member for Community (representing 77,000 out of 1.3 million members who work for Housing Associations & the Voluntary Sector).

Many thanks to my opponent, Kevin Jackson, who was a serious contender and acted completely appropriately during the election (unlike some of his slate).

The icing on the cake was that my running mate, Denise Thomas, was also elected as a first time NEC Community member (with a huge majority).

I will blog further on these elections but I feel so far that is the new NEC has a clear majority of pragmatic, labour movement family, left of centre, real people as its representatives.

UNISON #UNEC19 Elections - Black Members and Disabled Members seats

Following on from my post this morning on community and London seats, I have these recommendations from black and disabled members I trust. All UNISON members can vote for these seats

Black Members

Sandra Okwara - Female Seat

Manjula Kumari - Female Seat

Ash Dhobi - Male seat

Disabled Members

Katrina Murray - Female Seat

I will post more recommendations if you work outside of London for national seats.

UNISON #UNEC19 Elections - Community & Greater London Region Seats

I have just voted for the following candidates and will post the ballot paper to the independent electoral reform services later today. It took me 5 minutes.

UNISON is the largest trade union in the UK with 1.3 million members covering a wide range of traditional public services such as Local Government and the NHS as well as out sourced private companies and the voluntary sector. So our elections are a "little" complex.

I am standing for one of the two Community (for members who work for Housing Associations and the voluntary sector) national seats and Denise Thomas, for the other seat.

Denise has worked for the Community sector for 26 years, supporting adults with learning difficulties. She is a valued colleague on our Service Group Executive in battling for our sector.

Also I voted for the following 3 candidates standing for Greater London Regional seats.

Sonya Howard is a respected London activist. She is the secretary of the Kensington & Chelsea branch and she has been outstanding in supporting members and campaigning for safety and tenants rights post Grenfell fire.

Cynthia Adjei works for the GLA and is our London UNISON Regional Convenor for Equalities. She is a committed campaigner for greater funding for all public services to tackle homelessness, child poverty, in work poverty and gun/knife crime.

Eddie Brand has been a London Ambulance worker for 32 years and says things as it is. As long as I have known him he puts UNISON members first and foremost while proud to be a NHS paramedic.

Congratulations to Jo (daughter of our dear departed comrade, Irene Stacey) for being elected unopposed.

I will post my ballot paper for Black and Disabled Members seats next. If you don't work in the Community sector or in London, you can see my other recommendations here

"London Calling" UNISON NEC Elections 2019 recommendations

1.3 million UNISON members will be able to vote for their new National Executive Council (NEC) members from April 15. Ballot papers will be sent to their home address (Check My UNISON to make sure your address details are up to date ) with a pre-paid envelope to return. Due to government restrictions you cannot vote online or via your mobile phone.

"The union’s national executive council (NEC) is elected by members to speak on their behalf.

NEC members are elected by all members of UNISON via a postal vote. Members elect candidates to represent their region and their service group. There are also additional seats for Black members, young members and disabled members.

As with all other UNISON elections, the union’s principles of “proportionality and fair representation” means that some seats are reserved for women and low-paid members, so that the make-up of the NEC fairly represents the wider union.

Elections take place every two years, with members receiving a ballot paper with a prepaid envelope to return it to an independent scrutineer (an independent person who checks the ballot is fair and counts the votes)".

In the list above, I have made recommendations to UNISON members in the Greater London region on who to support. These are nearly all in line with the nominations made by my branch.

While all eligible London members will be able to vote for regional and national seats, they can also vote for their own "service" group candidates. NHS workers can vote in the health service group  elections, Council workers in the Local Government service group, college workers for Higher Education service group etc.

For example, I am a member of Community Service Group (Housing Associations and Voluntary sector) so I can vote for Greater London Regional seats (Cynthia, Sonya & Eddie); Community candidates (Denise and a certain John Gray); Black Members (Manjula, Sandra & Ash) and Disabled members (Katrina).

Only members aged under 27 can vote for Kendal for the Young Member seat (I have only just missed out obviously).

Regardless of who you vote for I hope that all UNISON members will exercise their right to be part of our union's democracy and take part in this really important election.

UNISON NEC Elections are Coming! Denise and John for Community seats

I received this morning confirmation that the Returning officer has "confirmed" that I am a candidate for the UNISON National Executive Council (NEC) elections for the Community (voluntary sector and housing associations) General Seat and that I am being opposed.

So game on. Ballot papers will be sent to members homes address (82,000 UNISON members are eligible to vote for this position). Voting starts on April 15 and ends 17 May.

So you can expect more than a few posts and tweets on this election in the coming weeks.

I am running with the wonderful, Denise Thomas, for the Community seats and will also be supporting other pragmatic, democratic left candidates standing elsewhere.

Watch this space!

Denise and John for UNISON Community NEC - Ballot papers out 15 April

This picture is from today of Denise Thomas and I outside the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Gallery in Euston following the National UNISON Community Service Group Executive meeting.

Denise and I are standing on a joint slate for the UNISON Community NEC seats. Female Seat (Denise) and General Seat (Me).

UNISON Community Service Group represents 82,000 members who work in voluntary organisations and housing associations.

We think we make a good match since we are both experienced activists and Denise's background is in the Voluntary sector and mine is in Housing Associations. We are standing on a radical but progressive manifesto which we believe is in the interests of all UNISON members.

Candidates are confirmed next week and ballot papers are sent out to all eligible members' home addresses on April 15.

We have both received over 50 UNISON branches nominating us and now this has been confirmed,  we will be writing to thank all of them for their marvellous support. Many thanks!

VOTE John Gray & Denise Thomas for UNISON Community NEC seats

Many thanks for all the branches that have supported us. If all goes well and we are accepted as candidates voting will start on 15 April (ballot papers sent to home addresses of members).

Re-elected at London UNISON Regional Council AGM 2019

I was privileged to be re-elected last week at the London UNISON Regional Council AGM as Finance convenor (Treasurer and Regional Council Officer) for I think the 12th year in a row.

The AGM was probably in my view the most constructive and positive one, I have ever been to in all my years as a UNISON activist. The UNISON Lay President, Gordon McKay (a NHS nurse), gave a typical self deprecating but very passionate keynote speech about the simple cruelty that this Tory Government shows towards the poor and the vulnerable.

Next a great presentation by http://greecesolidarity.org/ about the work they do to support the people of Greece and a plea for support from UNISON branches.

I gave my financial report to the AGM and was pleased that there were proper questions and challenges by delegates.

Deputy Convenor, Conroy Lawrence, who was also re-elected had nearly everyone in tears as he moved his branch's motion on Gun and Knife crime, and told us why this is so important to him as he explained about the senseless gun murder of his own son.  Branch activist, Misty Harmon-Russell also spoke during the debates.

Our Convenor, Yvonne Green, was re-elected unopposed and showed why, by her lovely polite, quietly spoken but firm chairing of the meeting. This is a real skill.

In the evening I had my Greater London UNISON Housing Association branch executive at the Hyde Housing Association headquarters and was unanimously nominated to be the Community NEC General Seat candidate (with my good comrade from Wales, Denise Thomas and other sensible broad left candidates )

All in all a good day.

UNISON NEC Elections 2019: Nominate Denise and John for Community Seats

"Dear Branch Secretary

We did send a request on 7 January 2019 and we apologise for sending another request if your branch has already decided nominations but we believe that some branches did not receive our previous request. We understand from UNISON that your branch is entitled to nominate for Community NEC seats. Please see attached our joint nomination request (see also below). We hope your branch will consider nominating us. If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact us.

NEC Elections 2019: Community General Seat & Female Seat Nomination Request
John Gray Denise Thomas

RMS 3083288 RMS 8688788

31 January 2019

Your branch is entitled to nominate candidates to the two Community seats for this year’s National Executive Council elections. We request that your branch considers nominating John Gray for the General Seat and Denise Thomas for the Female seat.

Denise is currently the Major Charities representative on the Community Service Group Executive (SGE). She is also a grassroots UNISON activist holding positions as Branch Black Members Officer and Welfare officer for Ymlaen/Forward Cymru Wales. Ymlaen/Forward Branch has over 4500 Community members in over 400 organisations. Denise is the secretary of the UNISON Black Workers Self Organised Group and sits on her regional committee and women’s committee.

John is currently the Community NEC General seat representative and has been an activist in UNISON for many years and held a number of branch and regional positions including Treasurer, Health & Safety, Welfare, Labour Link, International officer and Assistant Secretary. He is employed by a large Housing Association and is the Branch Secretary of the Greater London Housing Associations Branch which has over 3000 Community members. Recently he led a successful campaign that resulted in UNISON winning a ballot by a massive majority in favour of trade union recognition.

Denise has a background working in the Voluntary and Community sector for the past 26yrs supporting Adults with learning disabilities. As a branch activist Denise has focused on organising, recruitment and representing members to get a fair pay deal within her organisation. As a regional activist and SGE member she has fought to promote equality and inclusive work places.

John has served the union as a NEC member on the Policy and Development Committee, Trustee on the UNISON staff pension fund, National Labour link and is a trustee of UNISON “there for you” (Welfare) fund Committee & Vice-Chair Industrial action committee.

We deserve a Pay Rise!

Care and support staff wages in particular are under threat as unscrupulous employers deliberately underbid to win contracts then try and do their upmost to destroy TUPE protections.

Many Housing management organisations are cash rich after years of rent rises yet still refuse to give their staff decent pay rises. In the voluntary sector employers are funding the National Living wage by attacking terms and conditions and increasing workloads. 2

Both of us as NEC and SGE members have been working and campaigning with branches and regions to oppose these measures. We believe that Community members must play our part in opposing Austerity and arguing for an alternative economic policy. We need to pull together and get rid of the current UK government

We also support the Community specific campaigns below such as:-

· Better funding & resources for branches that support Community members. Community workers often work for small employers and in isolated workplaces.

· Campaign for Inclusive Workplace policies by employers

· No public money for “union busters”. Any employer that does not have a trade union recognition agreement should be barred from grants or contracts from local or national governments.

· Sector Wage Councils. Set up to decide the pay and conditions of all staff by collective bargaining including a living wage minimum for all Community workers and agency/sub-contractors.

· UNISON Ethical Care Charter. All employers must be called upon to support and sign up.

· Better governance and democracy. Increasingly many of our employer management boards are run by highly paid unelected and unrepresentative “elites”. There should be union employee representation on all Community Trust or management boards, especially remuneration committees (if applicable)

· Defend Pensions. Protect the Social Housing Pension fund and the Pension Trust from further cuts. Access to a decent defined benefit pension scheme for all.

· Better health & safety at work in particular protecting members by supporting the “End Violence at Work” charter.

· Recruit & train more activists to support members

We believe that we would both work together well as your Community NEC team. While Denise’s employer is a charity, John’s is a housing association, so we represent and complement both of the major sectors in the Community Service Group.

If you would like either of us to come and attend a branch meeting or hustings (under UNISON election rules) then please let us know and if we can, we will be delighted to come and speak.

Denise Thomas & John Gray
