Surgery, knocking up Little Ilford then phone banking for Beckton By election (both 18 July)

This morning I had my Councillor surgery in West Ham ward then cycled over to Little Ilford to go out and door knock for the Labour Candidate, Aktharul Alam. There are two By-elections next week on Thursday July 18. I joined my fellow UNISON member Alan Griffiths. 2 other Labour teams out canvassing.
We went to Warrior Square, which I am told is named after the famous Victorian Battleship, HMS Warrior, which was built nearby and is now in Portsmouth historic dockyard (which I have visited several times).
This was an overwhelmingly positive canvass. I think that residents realise that they need a local Labour Councillor, who can work with our newly elected local Labour MPs, to press the case for Newham, with a newly elected Labour Government. Makes sense.
Later that day I messed up on the timings of a canvass for our Labour Candidate in Beckton By-election, Blossom Young, so did some phone banking for her from home using the Labour Party "Dialogue" software. It is pretty frustrating process since so many telephone numbers are wrong but the 10 or so residents I managed to speak to were all Labour, which was positive.
If any London Labour activists can help out this week and on the day with our 2 by elections then please do. There is a problem with the link to Labour events website which I hope will be sorted out very soon.

Ringing West Hammers about Boris & 2 Job MPs

This afternoon I was supposed to go out knocking on doors and speaking to residents with our MP, Lyn Brown. However, it was cancelled, so instead I decided to ring residents in the ward I represent as a Councillor, West Ham.

I used the Labour Party telephone survey app called "Dialogue". All you need to do is to register with your Labour Party membership  account, then have a laptop, tablet or computer with internet access and a phone (preferably a landline which is much cheaper to the Party but you can use a mobile phone). It is completely free for members to use if you have access to unlimited internet.

I started ringing late Saturday afternoon which I have not done before but thought it would be a good time to ring. The first person I spoke to was very suspicious about why we were ringing since she had lived in the area for 30 years and never had a phone call before from her local Councillor. I assured her that while telephone contact was relatively new, we had knocked on her door at least once every 4 years for the 3 terms I have been her Councillor.

Interestingly, the suggested script for this call asked for views on the MPs second jobs scandal and views on the Tories and Boris Johnson.

Her response was that she was not aware of this issue and had not heard anything. Which I thought was surprising but maybe indicated to me that we need to be careful of how issues important to our political bubbles are not of interest to our residents?

However, the next person I managed to speak to was fully aware of this scandal and furious about it. Despite cooking a meal for her family, she made it clear what she thought of Boris Johnson. She had 2 jobs and worked long hours but that was only because her pay was so low.

She told me that she was cooking Chicken, Avocado with Jellof rice and invited me to join her family for the meal! Sadly I had to decline due to a prior commitment but next time!

While the next person was quite direct and made it clear that not only was he not a supporter of the Labour Party ("and never will") but that he did not even live in Newham. So I had to apologise for contacting him and made sure that I updated the system to make clear that this telephone number was wrong and not to be used.

Most answered calls were not contentious and while residents were all pretty busy and many not able to complete the full survey but I was able to input I believe 25 survey results which is not bad and a majority of those who responded said they also support Labour.

I had to stop after a technical problem with Dialogue which meant for some reason that I could not continue to ring people, which I could not overcome but overall I thought it had gone well.

Solidarity Telecanvassing Little Ilford & Marked Register Training in St John's

A busy day on Saturday. I joined a virtual (using Labour Party dialogue software) telecanvassing session in Little Ilford in the morning from home (now up to 1299 calls for this year).

Ironically I had to deal with a problem that my broad band provider was blocking "dialogue" from connecting  to me so I had to register the number on my telephone number "safe list". I  imagine this may explain why some members cannot use this telecanvass service.

In the afternoon I joined colleagues for a training event in a hired room in St John's Church Stratford, on entering election data from the "marked register" (a photocopy sheet which shows if a ballot paper was issued to a resident at a polling station during a recent election).

This information has to be uploaded manually, which is a pain but it is really important to know who actually votes in elections. This information obviously does not disclose how they voted and is open to all political parties (who have to pay for this data).

I am hoping that this training will be made available to Labour Party activists across Newham.

Labour Unions: NHS Fair Pay Rally & Phone Bank

This evening there was a really positive Labour Unions NHS Fair Pay rally with speakers Paula Barker MP, Chair; Cllr Linda Hobson, Unison Rep & Nurse; Colenzo Jarrett-Thorpe, Unite National Officer for Health; Holly Turner, GMB Rep & Nurse and Jo Stevens MP.

Totally agree with my UNISON comrade, NHS nurse & fellow Councillor @LindaAHobson

"NHS staff are wheeled out by the Govt for photo opps but when it comes to pay we're just insulted.
That's why we have to hit the phones and win votes for Labour on May 6"

Th erally was followed by a 60 minute Labour phone bank for Labour local elections using the dialogue software.

I made 31 calls, had 47 call outcomes (whatever that means) and 10 voter surveys completed.

Many thanks to Joe Cox from Labour Unions and Gail McDude from the Labour Party for organising this rally and phone bank.

Newham Labour Unions telecanvass with Assembly Member Unmesh Desai - Tuesday 2 March 6pm-7.30pm

On Tuesday 2 March 6-7.30pm trade union activists in Newham have organised a joint telecanvassing session in support of Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan and our Labour Assembly members.

East London and City Assembly member, Unmesh Desai, will be in attendance.

The elections in May 6th are only 68 days away and as much as I prefer other forms of campaigning, telecanvassing is the only thing allowed at the moment due to Covid.

Check out this article in Labour List by Sadiq on the positive difference trade unions make and his commitment to work with us.

Unfortunately since we have to use Labour Party software programme called "dialogue" only Party members can participate.

Can members to try and log into dialogue prior to joining the meeting at this session. Go to try and log in to https://dialogue.labour.org.uk/login first? People not being able to log in because they've not used the Labour online systems before is a common problem and usually eats into training time.

People should attempt to use an email address that they think they might've used in the past and then click "forgot password" in order to reset. If this leads to no response in an email inbox or junk folder, then they're going to need their membership number in order to link their email to their membership and that can be done at the following link https://login.labour.org.uk/activate

If there are still issues, they'll need to contact campaigns technology (email labourmembership@labour.org.uk or call on 0345 092 2299 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).

All West Ham Labour party members should have received an invite and I hope that East Ham will be able to do the same.

I hope that similar sessions will take place at least fortnightly until the election.

All Labour Party trade union members welcome regardless whether their union is affiliated to the Party or not.

Early Voting in Newham for Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan (and campaign begins to step up).

Check out this "early voting" video by the Labour Party promoting postal vote registration in Newham. "Early voting can help double the Labour vote".

Yesterday there was a meeting of Newham Labour Union activists, where it was agreed to hold regular telecanvassing sessions in the run up to May 6 with our local London Assembly Candidate, Unmesh Desai.

This morning, Labour Mayor, Sadiq Khan, gave a keynote address by video to the UNISON Greater London Regional Council and praised our public service workers for their fantastic work and sacrifice during Covid. In particular our London Ambulance Service.

This evening there was a training session and phone bank for West Ham ward members. I was also pleased to see on email that West Ham ward is currently the number one ward in the borough (out of 20 wards) for telecanvassing campaign activity. Many thanks to our Labour Group organiser Hasib Baber for all his hard work (and patience!) training members.

Having a dialogue with West Ham residents

This morning there was a Newham wide Labour telecanvassing session using the Labour Party "dialogue" software to call residents about their views about Covid and the forthcoming local elections in May.

I don't particularly like telecanvassing and much prefer going door knocking and speaking to people face to face. Obviously this cannot happen at the moment so the only means of direct political canvassing is via the phone using a special software tool called "dialogue". .

You need a landline (preferred since cheaper for the Labour Party who pays all costs) or mobile phone and a PC, laptop or tablet.

I was phoning residents in West Ham which is the ward I represent as a Councillor. Perhaps it was due to the cold but it was by far the best telephone canvassing session I have had using "dialogue". For understandable reasons many people block or will not pick up calls from anyone they do not recognise.

I was able to speak to a number of residents and had some really good conversations with them. This included those residents who were highly critical of Labour and in particular local Council issues. We have to listen to them to understand their concerns and act upon them where possible.

I was even given by dialogue a "John Gray" to ring in my ward. Alas, he did not pick up the phone to speak to his long lost cousin and namesake. .

Our East London Labour Assembly member, Unmesh Desai, joined us and gave a pep talk on the importance of getting the Labour vote out in Newham. Since the London Mayor and Assembly vote is by proportionate representation (PR) every singe vote will count.

We later spoke and agreed to organise a Labour unions meeting in Newham on how we can help achieve this.
