West Ham Ward Surgeries - in and out

This morning I cycled to Stratford Library for my West Ham Councillor surgery. It was busy, with two consecutive residents seeking advice on housing eviction notices—one case very urgent—and in both instances the residents were in poor health. I contacted Newham’s “out of hours” service and had some serious conversations with them about next steps. I can’t help wondering if these so-called “no fault” evictions are linked to the Labour Government’s Renters Rights Bill, set to come into effect on 1 May 2026. I’ll be raising members’ enquiries for both cases.

In the afternoon, I met fellow ward candidates for the May 2026 elections, Adjoa and Sam, at Plaistow cafĂ© for campaign planning, before joining a West Ham ward street surgery with Labour colleagues. We had two teams out and three people new to canvassing who, after some on-the-job training, were knocking on doors by the end. There were plenty of positive interactions, a few trickier ones, but always interesting conversations with residents. Most people I spoke to seemed to appreciate us knocking, introducing ourselves, and listening—responding when needed, though not always. Listening matters, but people also want answers.

A Labour Movement Day

This Labour Movement Day started at 9.30am with a virtual UNISON pre delegation meeting to the TUC London, East & South East TUC  (LESE) Regional Council. I had to leave it early to cycle to my Labour Councillor surgery in Stratford Library. After which I came back home to join the actual LESE meeting and listened to a very good panel debate on the rise of the far right.

At 2pm I met local Labour Party activists and the Newham Labour Mayoral Candidate for May 2026, Forhad Hussain, to carry out a "street surgery" in my ward, West Ham. This involved knocking on resident doors, introducing ourselves and asking if they had any issues with the Council that they wanted to discuss with us. Forhad went down very well with residents. We made around 36 contacts and left cards for those who were out.

The overall response was very good. People were generally pleased to see us and while some gave us the benefit of their very firm views about local problems with parking, street cleansing and also national policies, they were also willing to engage and listen to possible solutions and ways forward.

Afterwards, we had coffee (and gossip) at a local cafe.

A good day.

On the knocker for Sofia Patel in Boleyn

This morning after my Councillor surgery in West Ham, I cycled over to the Champions Statute in Boleyn ward. There I joined the canvass team supporting our excellent candidate, Sofia Patel, who was born and brought up in Newham and lives in the ward.

It was a really positive canvass and Sofia was brilliant at listening to residents and showing how she is keen to help and support them. I had some really interesting conversations with residents including one who are Labour doorstep app identified as being "Against" Labour the last time we had spoken to him a few years ago.

He told me that he was a lifelong Conservative voter who was now undecided for the first time ever. We had a "grown up" conversation about politics and the current state of the country. He was clearly embarrassed and frustrated at the antics of recent Tory leaders. I think we both agreed that the present government had been in power for 13 long years and it is time for a change. He still hadn't made up his mind but I think (and hope) he will take the plunge and at least "lend us" his vote.

Apart from that, my canvass returns were very solid. The online Labour doorstep app is a fantastic canvassing tool and you know who is on the electoral role and you can enter information instantly. No more soggy, unclear canvass sheets which are never inputted.

I will be going back to Boleyn but I will be also supporting Stephanie, who is standing for Labour in our other by election in Wall End ward.

Cllr Surgery then "on the knocker" for Labour in West Ham and Little Ilford

This morning I had my Councillor surgery at Stratford Library and spoke to two residents about complex housing issues, then I went and joined a canvass in Pond Road, West Ham E15. We made 59 contacts and had a overwhelming positive response but what was interesting is that I came across a number of voters who had previously been "Against" Labour but feel so let down by Boris Johnson that they now support us.

Amazingly, there was a bagpipe player, in full Highlander attire, playing music on the nearby Greenway overlooking the estate. I have no idea what he was doing.

Afterwards we had coffee at the Sawmill Cafe in Stratford, which is run by a Ukrainian family. It was wonderful to see the cards on the counter from local people to the staff supporting their nations battle against Putin's fascist aggression.

Next I joined a canvass team in Little Ilford run by new Candidate, Nur Nahar. It was one of the most successful campaigning I have been on in ages. Residents were really pleased to be contacted and Nur, who is a local NHS practice nurse, was simply amazing with them.

We had 130 contacts, overwhelmingly Labour. Little Ilford ward has a fantastic candidate team. Standing with Nur is Elizabeth Brooker who is a great organiser alongside a top trade union activist, Abul Bashar Syed.

A day in the life - Thursday 27 September 2018

This is one day in my life as a Newham Council Cabinet member, which was particularly busy but pretty much reflects what all Newham Cabinet members experience on a regular basis. Compared to the Mayor's normal diary, it was probably a walk in the park.

I came back late on Wednesday evening from Labour Party conference in Liverpool. 9am on Thursday, I had my first meeting in Newham Dockside, chairing a working group of Council Officers on the future of Community Spaces (Centres) in the borough. A very difficult issue but the meeting (I felt) went really well and was positive and constructive.

Next I had to rush off to chair a UNISON London regional forum on the Local Government Pension Fund in central London. I had doubled booked myself so was a little late. In the afternoon I attended a fascinating meeting of the Newham Homeless Forum in Anchor House with Cllr Susan Masters, followed by a tour of the marvellous new register office at East Ham Town Hall. I then went across the road for a meet with Newham College of Further Education heads.

After that I had a surgery in my ward in the tenants and residents room in Brassett Point. Finishing with a meeting of Audit Committee in East Town Hall which ended around 9pm. (Followed by a short recovery drink in the Red Lion).

Hope this doesn't seem like gloating "look how busy I am" or "pity me". I am really enjoying the challenge because I am convinced that we (all Labour Councillors and the Mayor) will make a big difference for the better to the lives of our residents.

UNISON "there for you" drop in Surgery 8 June 2017

UNISON Housing Association Branch Welfare Officer Mitsy holds a surgery for members in the Resource for London cafe, 356 Holloway Road, London, N7 6PA every second Thursday 10-3pm. The next one is due this Thursday 8 June.

As a fellow West Ham Labour Party member, I shall expect Mitsy will be out later that day knocking doors in Ilford North or Westminster North.
