Tory Millionaires Day 6 April 2013

Are we really all in this together?

FACT This Tory/LibDem government is planing to cut the top rate tax band on April 6th.

It is estimated that 13,000 millionaires in this country will be £100,000 better off (I can't verify this but believe it to be accurate).

FACT This will happen at the same time that many millions of ordinary workers are facing yet another year of pay cuts?

FACT One rule for the rich and powerful in this country and another for everyone else?

Save St Helier Hospital (Tory Cllrs join Union Protest)

UNISON press release. "Campaigners fighting plans to axe maternity, casualty and children's services at St Helier Hospital in Sutton, Surrey took their protest to the doorstep of sacked Health Minister and local MP Paul Burstow (Sutton) at 12 noon Friday - 7th September - and have demanded a meeting to discuss the proposals which are due to go to formal public consultation on the 17th September.

UNISON members from St Helier Hospital were not only joined by their colleagues from the GMB but surprisingly by a number of London Borough of Sutton Conservative Party Councillors, who apart from pledging their commitment to Save St Helier Hospital held aloft a banner proclaiming "Vote Lib Dem Get Tory Cuts"

Michael Walker UNISON Regional Officer stated

"We have fought previous Governments who tried to close our hospital and won, we will do so again".

Lib Dem Sutton Council cuts Carers' wages by 40%

London UNISON press release:-
"Care staff lobbied London Borough of Sutton Council Adult Services Committee tonight (Tuesday19th June) and handed in a letter to the Committees chairman Councillor Colin Stears to highlight the plight of dedicated care staff

50 care workers looking after vulnerable London Borough of Sutton residents/clients with learning difficulties (previously known as mental handicap). employed by MCCH (a registered charity) are facing the prospect of a 40% cut in their pay, equivalent to £10,000 per annum, some of our qualified nurses face even larger pay cuts.

Many of the clients are ex-Orchard Hill (Carshalton) NHS patient/clients/residents who have been relocated into the community in 2008. The staff have cared for the residents/clients over many years and as former NHS employee have always taken pride in the quality of care they provide.

When Orchard Hill closed, as a NHS employee they were transferred to MCCH (a registered charity) under TUPE arrangements the staff were reassured these arrangements would protect our terms and conditions into the future. They also hoped the London Borough of Sutton would honor those arrangements after it took control of the contract from the NHS.

However, now the care the clients receive and the pay and condition of care staff are facing significant detrimental changes. UNISON understands that the London Borough of Sutton have notified MCCH that they intend to cut significantly the hourly rate they are willing to pay for care.

The Council officers have stated that the reason for the high level of cuts in funding, is due to Central Government ‘s reduction in Council funding, yet as recently as 14th June 2012 Government Ministers have stated that far from being cut extra resources were being made available for Adult Social Service.

The cuts are such, that the pay falls well below that agreed by the Mayor’s London Living Wage commitment of £8.30 and at £7.60 represents a significant cut in our hourly pay. Apart from the loss in pay, the care staff are also set to have cuts to our holiday leave entitlement, sick pay entitlement, London weighting and our pension for our retirement axed.  Those single mothers employed by the organisation face particular hardship and now face the prospect of losing their homes as a direct result of these proposals.

Michael Walker UNISON Regional Officer states "The experience of cuts of this magnitude elsewhere in care services has led to the loss of dedicated staff who the clients know and trust, problems recruiting quality staff and high turnover of staff.  "The situation is very grave for the is group of long serving and dedicated care staff, UNISON is not going to stand ideally by and watch a spiral of pay cuts to develop in the care sector"

"We urge the London Borough of Sutton to reopen discussions with UNISON and the MCCH to resolve this intolerable and devastating proposal".  Kim Brown UNISON Steward at MCCH states  "The care staff are truly shocked at the level of pay cuts they are being expected to accept and have no idea how they will be able to pay their bills.

"Some long serving staff are informing UNISON that the cuts in pay are so severe that their take home pay is equivalent to that they were paid 10 years ago, in 2002, Other staff are informing us that their own sons and daughters are earning more at local supermarkets"

NOTE: Paul Burstow MP is the local MP for Sutton and is the Governments Community Care Minister. London borough of Sutton is a Liberal Democratic Controlled Council

Barnsley by-election leaflet "It's Lib Dem or Labour here!"

The actual result of course was:-

Dan Jarvis (Lab) 14,724
Jane Collins (UKIP) 2,953
James Hockney (C) 1,999
Enis Dalton (BNP) 1,463
Tony Devoy (Ind) 1,266
Dominic Carman (LD) 1,012
Kevin Riddiough (Eng Dem) 544
Howling Laud Hope (Loony) 198
Michael Val Davies (Ind) 60

Lab maj 11,771: Turnout 36.5%

In 2010 the Lib Dems only beat the Tories by 6 votes.

Interestingly the new Labour MP, Dan Jarvis, is the first Barnsley MP not to be born in Yorkshire or be a former miner.  However, he did serve in the Parachute regiment.  Which went down well in this traditional working class seat.

"Say Hello, Wave Goodbye"

It's Saturday night and I'm staying indoors.  I'm not that interested in "Strictly" so instead I am doing a trawl of my favorite YouTube music videos that refer to saying "Goodbye" in honour of this Party Election Broadcast.  Firstly a blast to my past and Soft Cell with "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye".

Enjoy:)

Orange Clegg and Saint Vince are Janus

"FURTHER UPDATE: Labour's Kevin Brennan, as mischievous as ever, asked if Speaker Bercow could confirm that it would be in order for MPs to walk through both the Aye and the Noe lobby if they want to register an abstention.

He said that Lib Dems who wanted to claim they had voted both for and against tuition fees could therefore satisfy different audiences".

Nick Clegg and David Cameron: separated at birth?

"Listening to Nick Clegg’s speech I am struck by the fact that I could imagine David Cameron giving more or less exactly the same speech, almost word for word.”

Sheffield Dinner Ladies Petition for Fairness over pay

This is another great campaign by UNISON 3 Companies initiative - battling here to get privatised school dinner ladies (apologises for any sexist assumptions) paid decent minimum terms and conditions by Chartwells.

It is completely shameful that such companies seek to maximise profits out of the misery of already poorly paid employees.

I note that Sheffield City Council is run by the Lib Dems and I wonder what local MP Nick Clegg thinks of this?  After his "Savage Cuts" grandstanding I suppose he approves of this sort of thing as a way to bring down the public sector wage bill?

Luke on Why Lib Dem's won yesterday in Valentines Ward

At the risk of it sounding just like “sour grapes” I thought this was interesting analysis reported by Luke. "There was also a by election in Redbridge yesterday, which the Liberal Democrats won. Their literature concentrated on Redbridge Council’s foreign policy and used some pretty unpleasant pictures of Gaza.

Interestingly they broke a cardinal rule by naming an opponent, just one - the Leader of the Council, Cllr Alan Weinberg.I am also told from friends campaigning in the ward, that there were people knocking on doors, speaking of Gaza and mentioning what Conservative Cllr Weinberg and the Labour Foreign Secretary have in common - which was why their respective parties were not campaigning on the council’s foreign policy.

I wonder who should be ashamed of that deceit?" East London Tory Agent Peter Golds.

Maybe after the “respect” candidacy imploded the mysterious “canvassers” that I saw last night mentioned here were those out spreading such frankly racist filth.
