West Ham Labour volunteers on Polling Day 8 June

On Saturday I sent off my postal vote (see right). Tonight I have been ringing some of the 225 West Ham Party members and residents who have volunteered to help on polling day. We have also sent them this email below. We need to win these marginals!!!

Dear Friend

Thank you for signing up to help the Labour party in the 2017 General Election.
We're asking you to help us in two places where the result may be really close: Ilford North and Westminster North.

Ilford North - Click here for info and to sign up to help in Ilford North

Westminster North - Click here for info and to sign up to help in Westminster North

And if you're really keen - Ilford North are asking for volunteers to deliver leaflets at 5.30am! (click here)

Thank you again for signing up to help. In 2015 Labour only won in Ilford North by 589 votes. Every single vote really does count so if you're able to help you will be making a real difference.

Thank you

Mr Cenz starts new Street Art Mural In West Ham

I stopped off today to say hello to Street Artist, "Mr Cenz", who is creating a mural in West Ham ward, Church Road junction with New Plaistow Road, E15 (next to William Hill bookmakers).

Mr Cenz is a professional international artist. He reckons it will take a week for him to complete this mural. I will try and stop off everyday and update on progress until he finishes.

In July there was this fantastic "Tiger" mural painted in Holbrook Road, West Ham which I don't think was by him but he did do this mural in Plaistow in May.

What can be wrong with turning bland, forgettable and often ugly urban spaces into public works of art?

West Hammers out Khanpaigning in Green St, Plaistow & Custom House

It has been a busy weekend for West Ham Labour. Yesterday I was out with a Labour canvass team for Sadiq Khan as mayor in Green Street. See Vice Chair Campaigns, Julianne Marriott, briefing the team beforehand on what to do. Highlight of the morning was calling at a Roman Catholic nunnery.

Then we met our MP Lyn Brown, at the East Shopping centre which was celebrating its first birthday. Some members also attended the anti racism rally in Trafalgar Square.

In the afternoon we were in Plaistow South ward with City & East GLA candidate Unmesh Desai.  As you can see from the photo outside the fire station, we had a number of (very) young socialists with us. I was with the team led by Stratford Cllr, Charlene McLean, who used her daughters pram to hold spare leaflets and sheets. Picked up some repair and school issues which were dealt with by local Cllr Neil Wilson. Picture of excited staffie, stalking cat and CLP secretary, Alan Griffiths.

In the evening there was a meeting of City and East Momentum followed by a social in Forest Gate. This morning there was another canvass team out in Custom House led by local Councillors Rokhsana Fiaz and Pat Holland. This evening there is Sunday Night Live at the Stratford Picture House on "Does Feminism Need a Upgrade" (5pm-6.30)

West Ham Ward welcome to our new Labour Party members

Picture from last Thursday with West Ham ward officers busy filling out names and addresses on welcome letters to new members. We then went out and hand delivered the letters speaking to the new members whenever possible.

The new members I spoke to were really pleased that we had called. Let us see how many become active.

"West Ham Branch Labour Party

Dear Member
I hope that you are enjoying the summer. I am writing to welcome you very warmly to West Ham Branch Labour party.

This has been a strange time for Labour supporters in Newham: both proud of our Labour MPs who increased their majorities, but also desperately sad and worrying for everyone who cares about protecting the vulnerable, about education, about the NHS, about people in low-paid work, about people who need benefits... and sadly the list goes on.

Here in West Ham we are determined not to take the General Election result lying down. Now more than ever we need to show people that we are a vibrant, passionate and compassionate alternative to the Tories. Our residents, especially those who are suffering under the Tories' policies, need to see us speaking out on their behalf. So we will be getting out and about again, building up our presence and aiming to build our membership.

I am therefore asking you if you could do one or more of the following?

  • ·         come to a meeting
  • ·         invite your friends
  • ·         canvass with us
Come to a meeting

We normally hold monthly ward meetings on the first Thursday of every month. This can be anything from a political discussion, a joint discussion with a neighbouring ward and a speaker, nominating candidates for various offices in the Local Constituency Party, to a social. Information about each meeting is sent out in advance. If you have a topic you would like to discuss, please do email or phone our Branch secretary John Whitworth with your suggestion.

Invite your friends

According to some research most people join a political party because someone asked them to. Think about your friends and family, especially the ones who shared our dismay at the election result. Have they joined the Labour party? Have you asked them to join? Might they be interested in becoming a supporter for only £3 so they can help choose the next Labour leader? All supporters, friends, well-wishers and hangers-on are warmly welcomed.

Campaigning

If you've never been canvassing before, don't be nervous! It's good exercise and great fun, and residents generally are pleased to find someone has made the effort to knock on their door. But if you're interested and want to come along, please email or call our Branch secretary John Whitworth and we can make sure we keep you in the loop.

We really hope to see you soon. Please don't hesitate to drop us a line if you want to get involved, if you have any ideas, or any questions.
Warmest wishes,
Seyi

Great Newham Run 2015

Off message-ish but last Sunday (19 July) I took part in the first Great Newham Run 10k in the Queen Elizabeth Park. I have also taken part in the Great North Run in Newcastle and the Great South Run in Portsmouth.

For I think the fifth year in a row, I took part in a running (or rather in my case - a jogging very slowly) event in Newham. The weather was warm but there was a very welcome cooling breeze. It seemed well organised apart from huge queues for the portable toilets at the start.

I was in the Green wave which started off just after 10am near the ArcelorMittal Orbit. Running legend and founder of the Great North Run, Brendan Foster, set us off. The route was around the Olympic park and went past all the iconic Olympic 2012 sports stadiums that are still standing - the main stadium, the Aquatics centre and the Velodrome. The park is also a mass of canals and beautiful green spaces.

During the final 300m you are in the Olympic Stadium itself and running along the track to the finish line which is great thrill.

Fellow Newham Councillors James Beckles and Terry Paul also took part (Terry had the previous day also particated in the Great Newham Swim with Cllr Julianne Marriot in Victoria Docks).

The run itself was a great experience. The big downside was that I didn't see very many Newham residents taking part. We were identified on our number bib. Despite being host to the Olympics in 2212, Newham also has the most "inactive" adults in the country. Is this because we have very little organised youth work provision in the Borough?

There was also a distant lack of black runners taking part. Newham and the boroughs that surround the Park are amongst the most ethically diverse in the country.  While I love Queen Elizabeth Park, I often think it has become a middle class playground and local Newham residents for whatever reason are excluded. Something to work upon I think.

Ilford North campaigning and cake with Lyn Brown MP

104 days left to get rid of this Tory/Lib Dem Government

"Help get a Labour government elected in May. Lyn Brown MP and your West Ham colleagues will be in Ilford North on Saturday (24 Jan). It's Labour candidate Wes Streeting's birthday - which means campaigning with cake!

Instead of meeting at Fairlop we'll meet at the Campaign Office, 153b Beehive Lane, Ilford, IG4 5DX (entrance in Radnor Crescent) - a five minute walk from Gants Hill tube. As usual we'll be leaving from outside Stratford station at 1.30pm.

I hope you can join us. Our work identifying Labour voters in Ilford North is just part of huge amounts of work all across the country to get Labour MPs and a Labour government elected. Tweet  John Gray (@grayee) if you need any info on the day.

Best wishes

West Ham Labour January update - General Election just 120 days away (& debate on Syria)

"Happy 2015... It's only seven days into the new year and already voters can't have failed to notice there's a General Election coming.

The Tories have already published a false dossier on Labour's plans and the NHS is in crisis.

General Election 2015
We've got 120 days to get a Labour government elected. It's a battle we need to win seat by seat. West Ham is working to turn Ilford North from Conservative to Labour by getting Labour's Wes Streeting elected as the new MP.

Please come and help Labour win in May (and we'll help you if you've not done it before) by joining us talking to voters in Ilford North..

We're meeting this Saturday 10 January outside Stratford station at 1.30pm (or at Fairlop station at 2pm). For more info contact Julianne.

We'll also be helping Ilford North:
24 January at Statford station at 1.30pm (or 2pm at Fairlop)
14 February at Stratford station at 1.30pm (or 2pm at Fairlop)
28 February at Statford station at 1.30pm (for 2pm at Fairlop)

All members meeting (GC) on 22 January - Syria
We've got a great speaker - the former British Ambassador to Syria, Basil Eastwood who will be giving us the background to the current Syrian conflict. We will be asking ourselves, four years into the bloody civil war, what hope ahead for Syrians? And how can the UK help? All members are very welcome.

Meeting starts at 7.30pm at 306 High St, Stratford, E15 1AJ And thank you to everyone who came to our Christmas social and quiz. We had a great time and also raised some much needed money for the election campaign.

Best wishes Julianne Marriott (West Ham CLP Vice Chair)"

West Ham Labour Party Christmas Quiz – Fri 5 December

Hat tip Julianne at West Ham Labour blog. "Our Christmas social and quiz is back by popular demand. Quizmasters, Conor and Dianne, will be testing us again with a new twist on ‘guess the crisp flavour’ (and plenty of other questions) and as we had such a brilliant feast last year we’re again asking you to bring along food to share.

We’ll be starting from 7:30pm, with the quiz beginning about 8pm (but you can arrive any time and still take part). And don’t worry if you don’t know many other people – you’ll be able to join a team on the night.

There’s no charge for our Christmas social – but we will be very much encouraging you to buy lots of raffle tickets.

Family and friends are very welcome and if you’re able to let us know you’re coming that would be really helpful (but don’t worry if you haven’t – please still turn up and join us).

Just to recap:

When: 7.30pm Friday 5 December (but you can join us anytime).

Where: Vicarage Lane Community Centre, Glovier Close, E15 4HW

What: Chatting and catching up, Christmas quiz, raffle and lots of lovely food

Look forward to seeing you there".

West Hammers in Ilford North #labourdoorstep

Yesterday morning after my Council Surgery I joined fellow West Ham CLP activists "next door" in the marginal seat of Ilford North.

We joined up with the Labour Candidate Wes Streeting and his team.

West Ham CLP has been "twinned" with Ilford North (and Thurrock) for the General Election.

It is of course absolutely vital that we win these marginals next year to get rid of the Tories.  It will not be easy but I pleased to note that I did speak to residents who had voted Tory last time but were considering voting Labour in May.

Picture of Wes (2nd left) and team which included our "Supernice" and cute secret weapon in getting out the Labour vote, the pint sized West Ham ringer and number one "knock-er up-er" Milly!

You can find out details of further Ilford North campaigning here

West Ham CLP Housing motion chosen for Labour conference 2014

Hat tip Julianne at West Ham Labour blog. "Last night West Ham’s Executive Committee agreed to submit a contemporary motion to Labour’s party conference. The motion presses Labour to take further action to provide genuinely affordable housing (text below).

EC considered two motions – one on Gaza and one on housing. There was overwhelming discussion and support for both motions, but on a vote the CLP decided to submit the motion on housing.

There’s quite a few stages to go before our motion gets debated at conference. Firstly it has to be accepted by the conference committee, if it is (and many are not) it will be grouped with similar motions.

The motion would then go to a ballot of conference delegates. If our motion was chosen for debate (up to eight motions can be chosen) our delegate, Julianne Marriott, would need to work with the delegates who submitted similar motions to agree the wording of a joint motion and who should speak in the debate. After a debate Labour’s policy commission will consider the motion and debate.

We’ll update on how our motion fares on its journey to conference.

Text of the contemporary motion:

“Homes people can afford
Conference notes:

1. TUC’s research, published on 2 September, which finds that Copeland in Cumbria is the only local authority in England where the average house price is less than three times average annual pay.

2. Shelter’s investigation, published 7 August, which found that 1 in 3 homeless families in London have been trapped in temporary accommodation for over two years because the major shortage of socially affordable homes means councils are struggling to find suitable housing for homeless families.

3. That twice as many working people (963,000) are relying on housing benefit than they were five years ago and that this Tory Government only invests £5 in the Affordable Homes Programme for every £95 it spends on housing benefit.

4. The compulsory landlord licensing scheme introduced by the London Borough of Newham which has prosecuted 500 landlords over health and safety breaches in the last 18 months.

5. These examples demonstrate not only the growing crisis of affordability in housing caused by this Government’s handling of the economy but also this Government’s refusal to address it.

Conference calls on the Labour party to continue to expose Tory failure and to take bold action to increase and rebalance funding for genuinely affordable homes, remove the right to buy subsidy and replace homes bought under right to buy on a like-for-like basis, create minimum statutory standards for landlords and prevent further inflation of the cost of housing.”

Reclaim the Media - Stop Murdoch - Sign the EU Petition

"Three companies, control 70% of our newspapers here in the UK. One of them, Murdoch, has just been thwarted in his ambition to takeover Time Warner, home of HBO, and it's likely he'll now return to his unfinished business of getting full control of BSkyB (which he had to abandon when the hacking scandal broke).

This level of control over the media prevents debate, provides the media control over our politics and police and is bad for democracy.

Please sign an EU petition to trigger a directive to curb the power of media moguls (it's just got 10 days to run) and it would be great if you could tweet or RT too (@hackinginquiry or @Media_Pluralism)

Hacked Off has just posted a blog http://hackinginquiry.org/comment/murdoch-now-has-his-eyes-fixed-on-europe/"

West Ham Labour Party AGM 2014 - The return of Agent Gray

On Thursday evening there was the AGM of West Ham Constituency Labour Party (CLP) which took place at our headquarters in the High Street, Stratford, E15.

The meeting began a with a 2 minutes silence to mark the recent unexpected death of respected East Ham Councillor, Alec Kellaway.  I known Alec for many years and and had worked closely with him on the Council Investment and Accounts Committee.  He had always been very considerate and supportive. His death is a personal shock and a great loss to the Party. Council meetings will not be the same without his home baked cakes.

The AGM went very smoothly and congratulations to the re-elected Chair, Charlene McLean and the other elected constituency officers;  Alan Griffiths, John Saunders, Gordon Miller, Julianne Marriott and Seyi Akiwowo.

Elected CLP Coordinators are Dianne Walls, Kim Silver, Veronica Oakeshott, Rania Ramli, Winston Vaughan, Conor McAuley, Terry Paul and David Christie.

Due to a very previous wicked life, I was elected as Campaign Coordinator and Agent with Mas Patel as Assistant.

Obviously the next year will be dominated by the forthcoming General Election and the need to re-elect our excellent local MP, Lyn Brown. While it is vital to keep up with the energetic local campaigning and canvassing that we have carried out since 2010, we all know that unless Labour wins its national target seats next year, Newham will be stuffed by a return of Tory rule.

Therefore we have a duty to make sure that in West Ham we do our bit in the target seats that we have been asked by the Party to support. As our Secretary, Alan Griffith, reminded us on the night, we have only "45 weeks until the 7th May 2014 General Election". Let us by hard work and unity turn this statement into we have only "45 weeks to get rid of this rotten Tory led Government".

(Picture of our West Ham HQ during the General Election 2010 when I was also the Agent)

Saying Goodbye to Gerry

Long standing West Ham Labour Party member Gerry died a month ago on 20 February.

This is my tribute.

"Last month on the 27 February family and friends remembered and celebrated the long life of Gerald Joseph Carlile at City of London crematorium in Manor Park.

Gerry was born in West Ham in 1931 and apart from National Service in Gibraltar, he lived here all his life.

He was the second youngest of a close knit family of 8 children. Gerry worked for most of his life in Blackwell Power station. When he was there he had to physically shovel coal into the furnaces that powered the electric generators. A hard, hot and dirty job.

Gerry was also a life long member of the Transport and General Workers Union (now Unite) and the Labour Party. He served on a number of union national committees and was an admirer and supporter of its former general secretary, Spanish Civil War International Brigade hero, Jack Jones.

Gerry was a tenant activist who refused on principle to buy his Council flat. He served as West Ham Labour Party disability officer and held numerous other ward and CLP positions.

Gerry was a Socialist who was proud to be British. His coffin was drapped in the Union Jack. He was proud of his Country although he wanted it to change and be fairer. To better look after the vulnerable and especially the elderly and disabled.

He honoured the memory of his older brother John who was killed in action in the Second World War when his ship was sunk by a Nazi submarine.

Like many East Enders he was a staunch supporter of the Royal family. The only time he and I ever had a real falling out was when I happened to mention that I was a republican, for which he made very clear his views and what he thought of those who didn't share them! But afterwards he never  mentioned this again.

At the service the eulogy was read by Gerry's friend and near neighbour for over 40 years, Cllr Ron Manley.

The final piece of music in the service was of course "God Save the Queen".

Afterwards we went to a excellent buffet and refreshments at the Railway Tavern pub in Stratford.

Many thanks to his family for organising such a wonderful service and T. Cribbs & Sons the funeral Directors and Rev Derek Talbot. Donations to Cancer Research.

Hat tip to Julianne for the photos and her tribute on West Ham Labour blog.

West Ham Street Surgery: Devenay Road, E15

Picture collage from yesterday's door knock in my ward at Devenay Road, London, E15.

Picture on top left is of me, top local community activist Bill and West Ham Labour candidate, John Whitworth.

Devenay Road and the surrounding streets are very interesting. It was a estate built by Newham Council 30 (ish?) years ago especially for local young couples on the waiting list who wanted to stay in the borough and buy its family sized homes. The Council at the time was able to arrange mortgages.

The houses are very attractive terrace or semi detached with garages and gardens next to West Ham Park.

I don't know if the house prices were subsidised or if the purpose was an early attempt to create mixed tenure communities in the area? Does anyone know?

Other pictures in collage show two beautiful chihuahuas puppies whose owner came to the door when I knocked; one of the gates that have sealed off part of Aileen Walk due to ASB, a rather mangy but curious ginger cat that followed us around the road and overgrown tree roots which are causing a pavement tripping hazard that I will be raising a Newham members enquiry about to the Council tomorrow (and various other environmental issues).

Hat tip to West Hammer Julianne Marriott for photos.
