Keep Osbourne's thieving hands off our Pensions! Sign the UNISON Petition

At the same time as Tory Chancellor George Osbourne, is trying to steal jobs from steel workers, benefits from the disabled, tax credits from the working poor and homes owned by Councils, he is also trying to plunder the local government pension scheme (LGPS).

The government is seeking powers to direct Council pension funds to pay into their pet infrastructure investment schemes and even interfere in the day to day running of the £180 billion funds and make them only invest in accordance to the current UK Government's foreign policy.

Ironic for someone who claims to be a small state Conservative and is refusing to nationalise the UK steel works because he believes in "free markets" and that the government shouldn't own anything.

It may be that the local government pension funds should invest more in infrastructure but they should be the ones making that investment decision after receiving proper advice, since they will have to carry the can if it all goes wrong. There is no "Crown Promise" nor even the tender mercies of the Pension Protection Fund for these schemes if they make the wrong investments decisions and go belly up.

British foreign policy is also notorious for recognising and supporting nasty, corrupt, totalitarian regimes but putting aside any ethical issues for the moment, that doesn't mean that these countries are suitable investment choices for council pensions funds to put their members' money into. Such regimes are often economic basket cases and not safe for pensions..

Since there has been no debate in Parliament on this "nationalisation" UNISON is encouraging its members to sign this Parliamentary Petition https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/125475 (see below) to get a debate in the House on this matter.

5 million people rely on the LGPS to pay their pensions. Government wants powers over LGPS investment funds, but they could gamble away members’ money on infrastructure projects. This is not allowed in any other UK scheme, including the MPs'. The LGPS must be invested in members’ best interests.

Parliament must debate this issue and make the government accountable for these powers of intervention as any such direction may breach the law. Specifically Article 18 paragraph 3 of the EU Directive 41/2003 Institutions for Occupational Retire Provision: “Member States shall not require institutions located in their territory to invest in particular categories of assets.”

Having an Amazon Free Christmas

Hi John,
Just a quick note before Christmas to say a HUGE thanks for donating to send the tax-dodging Amazon ad van out on the town!

It made a bit of a splash - circling Amazon's HQ, and then cruising through London's busy shopping streets: exposing Amazon's dodgy tax tricks to thousands of people in the run up to this week.

Hope you enjoyed staying Amazon-free this Christmas - and if you haven't got down to your wrapping yet here's some anti-amazon gift tags to print off and stick on your prezzies!

See you for more anti-Amazon antics in the new year :)

Lots of love,

Amazon Anonymous

PS. Check out below for some photos of the van in action:

Another day, another reason why the ABI is a self serving cartel ripping off UK pensioners

Check out Con Keating's brilliant rebuttal on Henry Tapper's blog of the latest attempt by the greedy cartel also known as the Association of British Insurers (ABI) to justify the ripping off of British pensioners.

I am amazed that otherwise decent and respectable insurance companies soil their reputation in this way. Their lust for excess profits from their rip off charges in the DC pension business mean they defend the indefensible and attack new better value ideas such as "Collective Defined Contributions schemes".

You are forced to conclude that the senior managers of insurance companies are far more concerned with their inflated pay and bonuses than the interests of their poor (in the true sense of the word) policy holders.

Personally, I hope a future Labour Government will break up this cartel and separate the insurance and pension industries. There are clear conflicts of interest.

Payday Loans? Hopefully only the turkey will get stuffed this Christmas

I first saw this excellent poster in the window of the North Wales Credit Union branch in Denbigh. Check out their press release on the Christmas rip off here.

It shows up what thieves Payday loan companies are and how they exploit the poor and vulnerable.

You would pay over 4000% APR interest on a 38 day £400 loan from Wonga or 26.8% APR from a credit union loan over a year.

If you paid the £400 off over a year then you would still pay over £100 less in interest than with Wonga in 38 days.

Good luck to Stella Creasy MP and her #Sharkstoppers campaign.

Corporate Tax-Dodging Causes Austerity #Boycott Starbucks

Companies such as Starbucks, Amazon.CON and Vodaphone seem to think that only the little people should pay taxes. Bite back little people.

Thieving, Robbing Bankers UPDATE

Update to last Thursday’s post about being charged a fee by a dodgy ATM. I emailed my bank to complain and eventually today I received the following uninformative reply: -

"Thank you for your email.

Please be advised this is an independent link machine and we have no relationship with the ATM provider. I am unable to advise you how to raise a complaint other than to contact the ATM provider direct.

Regards

Irene
****** Bank

I have replied (as you do)

“This is a totally inadequate response. I believe that I have been deceived of money by a company who you or your agents authorised my account to be debited.

It is entirely unclear who or how I am supposed to contact this "ATM provider".

I wish to make an official complaint about this response. Please note that I do not blame any individual worker, rather senior management have failed to train or provide sufficient support to staff on how to properly answer enquires.

Please also email me a copy of your complaints procedures”.

I have also looked at my ATM receipt (which luckily I have not lost or eaten). It is headed “Cashpoint ATM” which I assume (but it’s not clear) refers to Cashpoint PLC. So I have emailed them as well to make a complaint. Let’s see what happens.
