Llyn y Cau, Cader Idris by Kyffin Williams: Chwefror February 2020

Off message. For Christmas I bought a calendar with pictures each month from the Welsh artist, Kyffin Williams. This is for Chwefror (February). Cader Idris translated into English means "The Giants Armchair".

In 2013 I walked around Cader Idris ridge and took the picture below (from a different angle and light conditions to painting). It was one of the best (but toughest) walks I have ever been on.

Doreen Fletcher - A Retrospective

Better late than never but collage is from exhibition in Bow Arts Trust of works by East End painter Doreen Fletcher (who I think lives in Forest Gate, Newham).

What fantastic paintings from someone who so discouraged by lack of recognition that she gave up in 2004. Her paintings only came to public knowledge (and acclaim) in 2014.

I never thought that my Forest Gate Dentist surgery would feature in a work of art.

The exhibition finishes tomorrow (26 March).

On Monday evening I went to the launch of the "Newham Word Festival" with the Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz and my fellow Deputy Mayor Charlene McLean. It was a lovely launch and great to meet lots of Newham residents who are so passionate about literature, art and culture.

Check out the programme here

"Poetry, film, storytelling, authors discussing their books, visual arts, debates, performances and lots more. Featuring artists from near and far, local and international, at the peak of their careers or just starting out, Newham Word Festival takes place across the whole borough".

What is CDC? (and will it be contagious?)

Apologies for the tabloid style headline, but in the Queen's speech yesterday, she announced that the Government is looking to introduce Dutch style "Collective Defined Contribution" pensions (or CDC).

For the 99% of the population who don't have a clue about CDC (or pensions generally) please click on this link to a post by Nigel Stanley, in the TUC Touchstone site "What are CDC Pensions and why are they a good thing".

For another alternative view see Michael Johnson's post for the Centre for Policy Studies called "Collective DC: the least worse option".

I can't resist posting this picture.  I haven't a clue what point (if any) they were making but they made people smile.
