UNISON NDC 23 - Labour Link Fringe with Angela Rayner MP & Christina McAnea

There was a great fringe yesterday evening by UNISON Labour Link with former activist Angela Rayner turned MP and our General Secretary Christina McAnea (chaired by National Labour Link lead, Linda Hobson).

Angela was on form with a confident, at times funny but completely persuasive political message of hope and then Q & A that if Labour wins power in the next General election (not a given) that it will transform our country and its people for the better.

UNISON National Labour Link Forum 2022

Picture collage from UNISON Labour Link National Forum which took place on Friday in York. This was the first "in person" Forum since 2019 due to Covid. "Labour Link" is the (voluntary) political fund in UNISON that is affiliated to the Labour Party.

I was an elected member of the Greater London delegation. We had arrived the night before for our delegation meeting (followed by delegation meal).

Forum started with a well deserved presentation to our former General Secretary, Dave Prentis, thanking him for his decades of service to the union and to Labour Link. Dave also spoke about the battle ahead to get a Labour Government elected. There was a minutes silence to remember UNISON members who had passed away since we last met. Followed by a report from the Standing orders committee and on our Annual report.

Next we began to debate motions. I was really pleased that during the course of the Forum nearly all members of our delegation spoke. Some of them for the first time. I moved our regional motion on "Stop Workers Being Charged to have #DBS Checks When They Start Jobs" which was passed unanimously. I will post on this important campaign another time.

Before Lunch we had Angela Rayner MP, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party (and former UNISON activist who I remember well attending these forums) give the keynote speech. She started by breaking the welcome news that both she and Keir Starmer had been cleared by the Police over the so called "BeerGate" investigation. They had both pledged to resign if they had been prosecuted. A clear sign of integrity in contrast to the appalling behaviour by Boris Johnson. Angela gave a barnstorming speech, without any notes and dealt decisively with a range of questions during the Q&A.

After lunch we continued to debate motions and managed to complete all 18 by 3pm. After a break, we had a MPs Panel. Four MPs & (and also UNISON members) spoke about their roles & took part in Q&A. Daniel Zeichner MP, Liz Twist MP, Bambos Charalambous MP and Chi Onwurah MP.

I asked the panel the question about what would advise us to say to working class Tories when on the campaign trail for Labour? Some good responses about listening to people and showing them respect but also asking the question - do they feel safer in their communities under the Tories and are they better off financially?

Our National Chair (and NHS nurse) Linda Hobson closed the Forum and we look forward to next year's (hopefully we will return to it being a 2-day Forum).

The Good and The Bad - UNISON Labour Link & Self Organisation

Excellent news yesterday about the UNISON National Labour Link committee elections.

"Congratulations to my UNISON friends and colleagues Linda Hobson and Sian Stockham on being elected as Chair and Vice Chair of the UNISON National Labour Link Committee.

Especially happy to see Sian as one of the Wales NEC members flying the flag for Cymru/Wales.

As chair of UNISON Cymru/Wales Labour Link committee looking forward to working with both of you".

Hat tip Dan Beard.

However, today we find that the ultra left in UNISON NEC tried to destroy our members right to self organisation

"Felt very uncomfortable today by proposals by some on UNISON’s NEC, including a Vice President, that nominations made by our elected Self Organised Groups of who UNISON’s representatives on the TUC Women’s Committee and TUC Disabled Members Committee and the motions they agreed to submit to these conferences should be overturned by NEC.

I strongly argued against and said this was a very dangerous road to be going as it sounded like our Policy Committee knew what was good for women and disabled members rather than the women and disabled members themselves.

At the end it was agreed to remit for further discussion but if this is Time for Change I believe it is time for our members to challenge this change. The leading voice for Women, Disabled, Black and LGBTI+ members are those people themselves
".

Hat tip Gordon Mckay (former UNISON President and current NEC member).

Labour Unions: NHS Fair Pay Rally & Phone Bank

This evening there was a really positive Labour Unions NHS Fair Pay rally with speakers Paula Barker MP, Chair; Cllr Linda Hobson, Unison Rep & Nurse; Colenzo Jarrett-Thorpe, Unite National Officer for Health; Holly Turner, GMB Rep & Nurse and Jo Stevens MP.

Totally agree with my UNISON comrade, NHS nurse & fellow Councillor @LindaAHobson

"NHS staff are wheeled out by the Govt for photo opps but when it comes to pay we're just insulted.
That's why we have to hit the phones and win votes for Labour on May 6"

Th erally was followed by a 60 minute Labour phone bank for Labour local elections using the dialogue software.

I made 31 calls, had 47 call outcomes (whatever that means) and 10 voter surveys completed.

Many thanks to Joe Cox from Labour Unions and Gail McDude from the Labour Party for organising this rally and phone bank.

NHS 70 : Celebrate and Defend Party in Gateshead

Belated picture collage from NHS 70th Birthday Party held on 5 July in Gateshead. UNISON Labour Link Executive was meeting nearby "across the water" to prepare for the National Forum which started the following day and we volunteered to join the celebration.

Great speeches in defence of NHS from our President, Gordon Mckey, Ian Lavery MP, UNISON regional secretary, Clare Williams and Deputy Regional Convenor, Linda Hobson (both Gordon and Linda are NHS nurses).

The birthday cake was delicious.

It was great to be reassured that the sun always shines in Gateshead :)

Register to vote by Monday 18 April - last chance for May 5th elections

If you haven't registered to vote Click on https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. It will take about 5 minutes and all you need is your national insurance number (on a pay or pension slip, tax form, or plastic card).

"Register by 18 April to vote in the 5 May elections, or by 7 June to vote in the EU referendum on 23 June".

Hat tip to NHS nurse and UNISON activist Linda Hobson post below :-

"THINK YOU DON'T DO POLITICS? IT'S TIME TO THINK AGAIN.

As postal votes for local government elections, will soon be arriving on door mats for areas like Newcastle - remember to use your vote.

Remember how hard our ancestors, both men and women, had to fight and to die for our right to vote.

The Tory Government have hit areas like ours very hard in their ideological drive to destroy local governments, public services and labour strongholds.

Our local councils have seen millions of pounds of funding that should have been targeted for the most vulnerable in our local communities being diverted to richer Tory shires. It's daylight robbery and they're getting away with it.

The Tories are taking 81% of their budget cuts out of the pockets of women, whilst we continue to see largely rich, white men and large corporations being able to avoid and evade paying their taxes.
These are the very taxes that should be going towards funding the excellent public services that are so vital to our local communities.

If you've never voted before - think about what a no vote means.
Certain groups are targeted for worse cuts as the Tory Government know that group doesn't vote - so there's no comeback.

We can take to the streets, march, rally, shout and demonstrate day in and day out and it's right that we do, however, our politics is a numbers game, the party with the most votes gets the most power.

Whilst we cannot change our national government in these local elections, we can give the Tories a bloody nose if enough of us just vote against their divisive and dangerous policies. Policies that make more people vulnerable at a time when they are slashing funding for the most vulnerable.

Get out and vote - be proud of your vote and use it well, it does matter".
