The Passing of Second World War Veteran & Newham Resident: Gilbert: Clarke.

This Saturday I will be attending the memorial service at East Ham Town Hall on behalf of Newham Council to honour the life and service of Gilbert, a veteran whose courage helped safeguard our freedoms at a moment of profound danger for our country.

I feel a deep personal connection to the RAF and to the generation who stood against the Nazi threat. My maternal grandfather served in the RAF during the Second World War, and my father completed his national service in the RAF in Germany during the Berlin Airlift — a critical chapter in the defence of post‑war Europe. In my youth I was a proud member of the Air Training Corps, and I understand Gilbert was a committed supporter of our local Newham ATC. My sister also served in the RAF, continuing that thread of service across our family.

Gilbert belonged to that extraordinary generation who travelled thousands of miles, leaving home and loved ones, to protect people they had never met. Their bravery shaped the world we live in today. We owe them a debt that can never truly be repaid, but we can honour it — by remembering their sacrifice, by telling their stories, and by ensuring future generations understand what they gave to keep tyranny at bay.

We should never forget heroes like Gilbert.

Hat tip to Newham Voices for helping keep these important stories alive.

Newham Voices: Sept 24 - Blitz memory

This evening I finally got to read my monthly e-newsletter from "Newham Voices". Which is our free community led news, information and entertainment resource for Newham residents. While free, it costs money to run so please consider subscribing - Newham Voices.

I was reminded that this weekend is the anniversary of the start of the Blitz in London and the plaque shown in the caption remembers, the 13 Air Raid wardens killed by a German bomb. This was on what is now the site of the Newham Council repair depot in West Ham ward, where I am a Councillor.

By the end of the Blitz the following May, Hitler's Nazi bombers had killed 146 West Ham and East Ham residents. Many more civilians were die in the following years.

Never forget.

Newham Voices - April 2024: Abbey Gardens

Just finished reading the latest from our community newspaper "Newham Voices". To mark Community Garden Week they feature West Ham (not Stratford!!!) Abbey Gardens. Apart from this geographical error - a good read.

Newham Voices March 24: the worth of West Ham Park

I have just enjoyed reading the online version of our community newspaper "Newham Voices". A eclectic mix of local news, politics, arts, sports, notices, history and even fashion hints.

I enjoyed this calculation of the worth of the lovely West Ham Park. A Spring walk in the Park is definitely one of my favourites places to be.

Canning Town's hidden history: pioneering good homes for all (Newham Voices)

Reading this months "Newham Voices" (early via subscription) I did not realise that Newham had been a test bed for Parker Morris space standards on new build Council properties. There are many problems with properties built during this period but the size and living space of those built to Parker Morris standards is amazing. These decent homes standards was ended by the Tories in 1980 quelle surprise.

Well done to Eastside Community Heritage for this project.

Newham Voices: "East End Pubs" December 2023

I have finally got around to reading the December version of "Newham Voices". It has been a busy few weeks.  Lots of good stuff about politics and planning but my eye was caught about this review by Phil Mellows, of a new book called "East End Pubs".

I agree with Phil that it is a shame that the book is only confirmed to pubs in Tower Hamlets and Hackney (I have worked in Towers Hamlets for 30 years, so know a few of their pubs as well). The Newham pub gems mentioned are all my favourites (especially the Eddies and Black Lion).

Tonight, I had some different drinks and a great meal in a Bulgarian bar/cafe in Stratford High Street called Rodina-2, with Labour Party comrades, John Saunders and John Whitworth (we are known in West Ham as the "Three Johns").

I genuinely wonder, that if in the future it survives, the Rodina-2 , will eventually be recognised as the latest version of a traditional "East End" pub? I hope so.

Newham Voices Sept 23: "Newham in 50 Buildings"

Check out the latest news and views from our free local community newspaper, Newham Voices. I particularly enjoyed the review by Jean Gray ( no known relative!) on the Book "Newham in 50 Buildings" by Malcolm Batten. Which I must get and go on its guides and tours.

East Ham Newham Voices - By Elections Hustings

Yesterday morning I went to the hustings in East Ham Library organised by Newham Voices. Picture is of Labour Candidate for Boleyn Ward, Sofia Patel (Stephanie Garfield, Wall End Labour candidate was unable to attend) telling it as it is on - fly tipping, sex education, hate speech, housing, policing and diversity.

I admit that I am biased but I genuinely thought that Sofia was head and shoulders above everyone else on the panel. Dispite a rather vile sexist and anti working class question directed at her by those who claim to be pro equality (aka posh middle class white Green male's) that since she worked for the Labour Party she must be a Personal Assistant. However, she kept her cool and answered this and some other unpleasant attack questions with dignity, passion and great skill.

Many thanks to Newham Voices for organising this event and to all the candidates and all residents who attended (even the sexist bigots, who hopefully learnt some things - probably not).

I hope that there is a good turnout this Thursday 13 July, at the two by elections and we must let the People of Wall End and Boleyn wards decide (but don't forget to bring your photo ID!)

Newham Voices June 2023: The Black Lion in "Something Brewing"

I enjoyed reading the latest version of the free community newspaper "Newham Voices" https://www.facebook.com/newhamvoices/ over the weekend. The historic Black Lion pub in Plaistow is one of my top 5 favourite pubs in Newham.

It definitely has character and a great beer garden. The service and food is good and there is usually a fresh seafood stall in the car park during busy times. A regular post Labour Party meeting/canvass refreshment point. Many happy memories, some great political discussions and very occasionally, the odd stand up row!

"Newham Voices" Support meeting 17.12.22

Yesterday I went to Stratford Library to attend this meeting, celebrating 2 years of "Newham Voices" but also a call to arms for local residents, organisations and businesses to get involved and support it for the next 2 years and beyond.

I missed the beginning (and other speakers including the Newham Mayor, Rokhsana Fiaz) but was impressed that around 50 people, had over the course of the meeting, turned up the weekend before Christmas to talk about how to promote this important independent community voice.

"Newham Voices" needs more sponsors, advertisers, subscribers and most important, more volunteers prepared to give up a little bit of time to support the project. There is fantastic support and training offered to volunteers.

Check out for free the latest monthly edition here and how to subscribe, advertise and volunteer.

"Newham Voices needs your support. Come and join us 10 am Saturday, December 17th, at Stratford Library

For more than two years Newham Voices has been successfully providing community news and information for the people of Newham, but now we need your help!

Now your community newspaper is working on plans to continue printed publication into 2023 and  we have organised an urgent meeting for friends and supporters on Saturday December 17th at Stratford Library at 10am.

We will celebrate our achievements and present awards to those who have completed our community journalism training course. We will also discuss what we need to do to continue our good work.

We need your help to continue our work giving voice to residents and supporting Newham's vibrant community and voluntary sector. The Mayor has said she will try to join the meeting.

Newham is Britain’s most diverse and dynamic Borough, built on solidarity, compassion and creativity. It is a model for the future of London and needs an independent and democratic voice to speak up for people in the Borough

Newham Voices: October 2022 - Remembering Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth 11

Check out and subscribe to the latest edition of Newham's Independent Community paper. Page  1 & 7.

"School turns to street art to mourn the Queen

The death of the Queen which led to a wave of sadness among many in Newham, particularly children, prompted Julie Carver, a teacher at Gainsborough School West Ham to organise a special artistic legacy for the monarch.

The day after the Queen died she contacted street artists MurWalls and asked for their help. The result was this mural of the Queen donated to the school by UK based Canadian artist Chris Levine is best known for his “Lightness of Being” a feted portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) with her eyes closed.

The school’s mural is a picture of the Queen with her eyes open and in Mr Levine’s distinctive style.

Children laid flowers at the mural and people were able to write messages of condolence in a book on a table draped in the Union Jack. MurWalls Ltd, Street Art since 2019, info@murwalls.com"

Newham Voices - September 2022 (Three Mills Tragedy)

Just read the latest edition of the excellent Community newsletter https://newhamvoices.co.uk/. The article on page 11 on the "tragic story of heroism at the Three Mills Distillery" was really informative. The "Helping Hands Memorial" at the site, is where Newham trade unionists and Labour Party members have met in recent years to mark "Workers Memorial Day" which takes place every 28 April.
