UNISON NEC at our National Delegate Conference 2024 (with some missing for valid reasons)

This photo arrived this today by Royal Mail to my home address which I have scanned and uploaded. A great photograph of our General Secretary, Christina McAnea and many good comrades but also those who allowed a number of vile comments to be made in speeches at Conference about fellow members of UNISON.

This meant that some elected NEC members felt felt they had to leave the platform to try and support and comfort delegates who had been told in these "speeches" by a tiny number of far left extremists, that effectively they were useless at work and should be sacked.

The NEC Presidential team did nothing to protect these Members and stop such comments.

I have been going to UNISON conferences for 20 years or so and have never seen any thing so disgusting and shameful.

"UNISON votes to renew political fund"

Good result. 97% of UNISON members (who took part in the ballot) voted in favour of us retaining our Labour Link and Campaign fund. Trade unions funding is definitely the "Cleanest money in Politics".

Turn out was not great  (14%) but similar to other internal national elections and to many people, it is a no-brainer that unions should have campaigning political funds.

Soon we should get major change in the way we run union elections since the Labour Government has committed to allowing us to bring our elections process up-to-date with modern electronic and workplace voting. This should increase participation and turnout.

Hat tip UNISON votes to renew political fund | Article, News | News | UNISON National

"UNISON members in England, Scotland and Wales have voted overwhelmingly to retain the union’s political fund, which enables UNISON to take part in political activity.

Of the 187,598 members who participated, 96.7% voted to keep the political fund.

UNISON’s political fund has two sections: Labour Link and the campaign fund.

Labour Link takes the union’s campaign objectives into the Labour party and supports members to become MPs and councillors.

The campaign fund provides all the resources for our pro-public service campaigns, our equalities campaigns and the work that we do to combat the far right. Members choose which part of the fund to support – and can also pay into both.

UNISON is required to hold a ballot every ten years under anti-trade union legislation first introduced by the Thatcher government in 1984, which was designed to silence the campaigning voice of working people and defund the Labour party.

The 2024 ballot was open for one month, between 15 July and 16 August 2024.

In response to the results, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said: “The ballot result is an overwhelming vote in favour of keeping our members’ campaign voice and I want to thank everyone who took part.

“The reason so many members voted to keep the fund is because they see the difference it makes.

“Be it securing Labour commitments to the New Deal for Working People through our Labour Link or supporting UNISON’s work with Hope not Hate and Show Racism the Red Card through our campaign fund, both funds have never been more important. I am proud that our members value this part of our work so highly.”

Jim Hendrix mural on site of The Uppercut club

Picture last night of the new Street Art mural at the site of "The Uppercut club", Forest Gate, which sadly, I never visited (but I did go to the infamous "Lotus Club" across the road in the late 80s). The site of The Uppercut is now some sort of a railway ventilation shaft and the Lotus has been turned into flats. Such is life.

A very powerful portrait. Hat tip Zaro.

UNISON: Hybrid Working/Working from Home Guidance

Check out UNISON Guidance on this important subject for so many workers. Working from home/hybrid working is probably the biggest change, I have ever experienced in my time in employment. There is lots of positive things for workers and employers but also many negatives.

Reducing the need for long commutes, to and from work; therefore seeing your young children in the morning and before they go to bed, as well as potentially being more productive and focused is a positive. However, feeling alone and isolated, being unable to have a proper work life balance and switch off, as well as not having a home suitable to work, in is a negative.

I am aware of managers who actively discourage their employees from working in an office since working from home suits them, as well as managers who want their team to be in the same physical office as them, 9-5, every day of the working week regardless of any circumstances.

UNISON guidance, is as usual, sensible and pragmatic, aiming always to reach a consensus but making it clear, that if the employer does not share that approach, there will be consequences.

Support Abdi Mohamed - Labour Candidate for Bow East By Election

A perfect Labour fundraiser last night in Tower Hamlets for our candidate, Abid Mohamed, who is standing to replace Cllr Rachel Blake in Bow East. Rachel was elected as an MP for Cities & Westminster in the general election (and I was so happy to congratulate her in person on her fantastic victory).

I have worked in Bow East, off and on, for the last 31 years and I am certain that Abdi will make a superb Councillor.

He has the support and respect of Newham and Tower Hamlet Labour Activists in the new shared Parliamentary Consistency of Stratford and Bow.

Many thanks for Adam Allnutt for organising such a well run event. I continued with my run of luck in Labour Party raffles by winning a bottle of wine!

"Immigrants are not to blame for the housing crisis"

Check out this excellent article by Peter Apps (former Inside Housing magazine). Powerful factual arguments that is a million miles away from far right fake news.

"As the far right march through the streets of Britain, it is worth reminding ourselves that one of their favourite arguments is a fiction

It has been a scary week in Britain with news websites filling up with images of burned cars, smashed shop windows and angry young men in hoodies in running battles with riot police.

Like most people in the country, the scenes have surprised me. Yes, I could have told you there was a bubbling anger and an increasingly vocal, increasingly scary far right making its presence felt online and off.

But I did not think we were as close as we were to real-life violence on our streets and it does not leave me feeling particularly good about where we are going to go in the coming years, especially if someone like Robert Jenrick (an increasingly expert practitioner of dog-whistle politics) gets to become leader of the opposition.

As has been the case whenever the far right has raised its ugly head out of the miserable pubs, gentlemen’s clubs, golf courses and Reddit threads where it usually lurks, housing is a place it wants to turn the conversation

There is no real link with immigration and rising housing prices. 90% of new social tenancies go to UK citizens not recent immigrants. 81% to white families (in line with the general population).

Immigrants are amongst the victims of the housing scandal not the cause. That lies fairly and squarely with the previous government's housing policy.

Capital Ring 5: Streatham to Wimbledon Park

On Wednesday I completed a long standing political task which means that I have more time and headspace to do other things such as post a little more.

Also, to continue with Gill on our attempt to walk around London along the 78 mile Capital Ring. Our last walk around the ring was in rainy April. Since then there has been the London Mayoral election and a General election.  While we have done other walks, last Sunday was our first Capital Ring for 4 months.

Journey to the start at Streatham Common was pretty straight forward from Forest Gate with lots of different routes and took just over an hour.

The Capital Ring is pretty well signposted with only the occasional missing signage. There are a number of guidebooks and free websites such as Capital Ring Walk - Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk). I download each route onto my Ordinance Survey app which tracks you if you get lost. We use Capital Ring – Welcome to Footline Press! (colinsaunders.org.uk) as our guide book.

First interesting thing to see is a 1888 water pumping station which looks like a "Moorish Temple". A little way further at 14 Conyers Road, there is a strained glass window in a normal residential house showing a women watching a departing sailing boat.

We walked alongside the famous open air Tooting Bec lido. Opened in 1906 and one of the largest swimming pools in Europe. We stopped off at the park café for an enjoyable outdoor cooked breakfast.

Next point of interest (to me anyway) was passing Du Cane Court, which was described in our guide book as "one of the most elegant apartment blocks in South London, dating from the Art Deco period of the 1930s". Pretty impressive. While I could not see inside these apartments, it shows that you can have high density residential housing which looks attractive and stands the test of time.

We stopped off for coffee and treats in Wandsworth common next to a lake. The bench next to us was dedicated to the memory of Benni & Bella Spanier, who were murdered at Auschwitz in 1944 and their daughter Ruth, who escaped via the Kindertransport to England in 1939 aged 11.

After passing though more attractive parks and residential areas we walked past Wandsworth Prison, which is rather a grim and forbidding place. 135 executions took place at this site. The gallows were kept in working order until 1993.

We choose to walk through Wandsworth Cemetery rather than the adjacent road which was very nice and peaceful with some interesting graves and moving inscriptions.

Final point of interest was at number 61 (did not record which street) where there was a picture or another stained glass window of a women starting out to the street (see Facebook link for picture and other photos).

We finished at Wimbledon Park station and took train straight back home. An enjoyable 5.5 mile walk. Looking forward to walk 6. Wimbledon Park to Richmond, since rated as the "prettiest" walk in the ring.

Will also look out on route for any wombles.

"Night Anti-Hate Marchers faced down the thugs"

I do not normally post on Daily Mail front pages but as a UNISON colleague of mine has said regarding this uniquely progressive article by it..."Wow".

UNISON will stand up to the politics of hate

Recent racist riots across the country have been a disgrace and completely shameful. UNISON will be standing up to the thugs and bigots who are attempting to divide working class people by such violence and intimidation. They will not succeed.

The Health and Safety at Work Act turned 50 on 31 July

In a rapidly changing world of work - legislative modernisation, a properly funded HSE and stronger rights for union safety reps - are all essential to keep people safe at work. Get involved - unison.org.uk/unison-health-
