10 Years as a Councillor - New(ham) Kids on the Block 2010

Today is the 10th anniversary of my election as a Councillor for West Ham ward in the London Borough of Newham. The picture above was taken before an induction event held a few days later for newly elected Councillors.

It has been a privilege and a honour to serve as a Councillor even though it has been pretty "demanding" at times.

Sadly a few of my colleagues who were also elected have passed away since and out of the 60 Councillors elected in 2010 only 20 are still members.

While Labour was victorious in Newham on May 6 2010, the Tories won the general election which was also held on the same day. So it is a rather bitter sweet memory for me.

I was re-elected in 2018 for the 3rd time and then appointed by the new Mayor, Rokhsana Fiaz, as Cabinet lead for Housing Services and Deputy Mayor. It has had been a "full on" 2 years and for the last 2 months, due to the horrendous Covid-19 pandemic it has been particularly testing (although nothing when compared to the experience of our front line health and care workers).

However, I have no regrets whatsoever becoming a Councillor and still feel it is a great privilege and a honour to serve my community in this way.

Osborne Apologies

Fat Chance.

I don't think it will be much use trying to ring the Number 11 Emergency number either.

On route to Manchester for Labour Party Conference

Live post from Crew while on my way to Manchester for this year's Labour Party conference.

Ken Livingston was declared the London Labour Party candidate this morning.  He did well with 58% of the vote but Oona King came a  respectable second.

I'm not a delegate this year to conference but am going as a Councillor and Party member.  Tomorrow afternoon I have a ticket to the special leadership conference.  You probably know by now who I hope will win.  On Monday evening I will take part in this fringe as a panelist.

I'll try and blog as much as possible.

I'm 71% for Ed (it's an internet survey so it must be true)

The other day I got an email from Labour Leadership candidate, Diane Abbott asking me to take the Vote Match Tool test to find out who I should vote for.

To my surprise Diane did come joint 2nd with 58% score (with a certain David Miliband) and Ed Balls a narrow 4th with 57%.

While Ed Miliband came a clear 1st with 71%!

Andy Burham was not part of this survey since apparently his office did not send in his information in time.

I think this is supported by the Guardian media group?

UNISON Local Government Conference 2010

This is the first time for many years that I am not at the UNISON Local Government conference either as a delegate or visitor. Due to recent internal union constitutional changes those of us who work in the housing association and voluntary sector have been moved out of the Local Government organisational umbrella into a the new “Community” Service group.

Our conference will be held in Telford in November which I am sure will be just as nice as sunny Bournemouth!

In the meanwhile UNISONactive is posting here on the action and debates at this year’s local government conference. Picture (left) is from the last time we were at Bournemouth in 2008.

Re-elect Dave Prentis as UNISON General Secretary

There is of course yet another British election taking place soon. Next week the 1.3 million members of UNISON will receive ballot papers at their homes in order to elect our General Secretary.

I’m supporting the re-election of Dave Prentis who is exactly the sort of thoughtful but still passionate “bread and butter issues” trade unionist who we need to guide us through the very difficult times ahead.

Dave is in my view the only candidate (there are 3) who has not only the practical experience and abilities to lead our union but can also unite all members across all its different parts.

I could never support Roger Bannister as a candidate since he is a longstanding member of an ultra left “democratic centralist” revolutionary fringe party who could/would require him to support what the Party central committee thinks is best - not what is in the best interests of the union.

The third candidate Paul Holmes is a member of the Labour Party but he has allowed himself to be the candidate of the so-called UNISON “United left” front which is dominated by yet another brand of “Life of Brian” “democratic centralist” revolutionaries. Not only that but there are a tiny number of "Labour Party" entryists who are also actively supporting him. These people have been praying for a Tory government for years since they (somehow) believe the glorious revolution is just about to break out anytime soon in a Council Town Hall close to you.

Yeah...

So I will urge every member to please - Vote to Re-elect Dave - Vote Dave Prentis!

Celebrate MAY DAY 2010

I suppose that if you are a trade unionist you are entitled to a break of an hour or so from campaigning for the Labour Party to attend this important event in the Labour Movement Calendar.

Me? - Maybe next year.

Conroy Lawrence for Deputy Regional Convenor & Regional Rep @ TUC Conference

Check here - Below is Conroy's election statement

"I am seeking your support for re-election as Deputy Regional Convenor and Regional Delegate to TUC Conference 2010

During the last few years the regions lay leadership has finally started to reflect our membership and has done much to champion the cause of UNISON members in London. The Convenor Team has successfully strengthened UNISON in London by bringing greater unity, building participation across the differing service and self organised groups, and building a union to be proud of. I want to continue to work with Gloria Hanson as Convenor, John Gray as Finance Convenor, Lynn Bentley as Publicity Officer, Emma Rolland as Young Members Convenor with Monica Hirst as Equalities Convenor to continue to build on this in the coming year.

With 75% being female and 40% from black and ethnic minorities our membership in London is diverse. It is vital that the lay leadership continues to be representative. We also need to look at how things are currently done and consider new ways to make the union more relevant to engage and encourage members and new activists from all occupational and service groups to become active at all levels of the union.

We must continue to focus on real issues for real members. We must listen to our members, make their priorities ours and ensure all members in London have a voice.

Unfortunately the issues which our members continue to face on a daily basis - inequality, privatisation and marketisation, attacks on their terms and conditions and relentless budget cuts and reforms – don’t change. We need to continue to recruit and organise and build the region to ensure that we are strong enough to fight on their behalf and win!

In recent years I have been proud to be part of the unions campaigns to defend our NHS, for fair pay, a decent pensions scheme and against the far right. I want to continue our campaigning for decent London Weighting, affordable housing, greater equality and opposing the BNP everywhere they emerge.

As a Branch Officer at Lewisham Hospital I know first hand how difficult it can be to balance doing the day job with union duties and am committed to working to strengthen the support available to activists and branches to assist them as much as possible in representing their members at work.

Only a few years ago members in health felt they didn’t have a voice and weren’t represented in the region. As Chair of the Regional Health Committee I have been delighted to see more health branches than ever before becoming active and playing a central role within the region.

There is still a long way to go in the fight for equality but I am proud that my branch is one of the pilot branches taking part in the Challenging Racism Project.

If re-elected I will work tirelessly to represent the views of our members, to campaign for issues that affect them and ensure that their voice is heard loud and clear".

Gloria Hanson for Regional Convenor & Regional Rep @ NDC

Check out here - Below is Gloria’s election statement.

"I am seeking your support for my re-election as Regional Convenor and also Regional Delegate to NDC.

As the Regional Convenor, I am so proud to be part of this diverse lay leadership team which is representative of our membership and our considerable success in recent years of strengthening the region by bringing greater unity and democracy, building participation across differing service and self organised groups, and building a union to be proud of.

Our union and our members have faced many challenges this year but the region has seen many successes such as a sustained increase in recruitment, increase in activists attending training, winning equal pay claims, campaigns to protect jobs and conditions through cuts and restructuring and our work on equalities which goes from strength to strength.

I want to see London UNISON continue to campaign on real issues for real members - defending the NHS and directly provided services; strengthening our influence in Education and in Private Contractors; promoting equalities; Pensions, affordable housing, London Living Wage, opposing and defeating the far right and raising UNISON’s profile as the lead trade union in London.

Never has it been a more important time for public service workers to be a member of a trade union, which gives us an opportunity to continue to build and strengthen our union, by recruiting, organising and maximising participation. By getting our members active we can only become stronger and more representative. We must take every opportunity to look at how we make the union more relevant to all and encourage participation at all levels. I will continue to send a message out to our members that this is OUR union, and each member has a role to play and a contribution to make.

As an experienced black activist I know only too well the challenges our members and activists face. I will work to strengthen support for branches and activists in undertaking the difficult task of supporting members at work, as well as to encourage new activists to come forward from sections of the union where there is a long-established under-representation.

In the coming year our union and our members will face many changes and challenges for which we must be ready to act and adapt. If re-elected as Convenor, with Conroy Lawrence as Deputy, we will ensure that the voice of the membership – your voice –continues to be listened to and heard, and that we champion these voices. We will continue to work tirelessly in the fight for equality and fairness for our members, to give London UNISON a louder and effective voice that is listened to by all.

I am also standing as Regional Delegate for NDC. In recent years we have seen more branches and delegates attending and participating in NDC than ever before and I want to support, encourage and assist the London delegation to ensure a successful and productive conference.

London UNISON Calendar Girls (& Boys) 2010

It’s a little bit late but I think that this may be a very useful resource for folk to download, print off and use as a calendar for the forthcoming year?

(Alternatively some poor deluded souls might just want to place on a dartboard for target practice perchance? Especially the dodgy looking geezer in black jacket top right 2nd left)

UNISON London Regional Council AGM 2010 - Support YOUR union - VOTE for the winning team

It is coming up to that time of the year again. The future leadership of UNISON London will be decided on 3rd Feb at the Regional Council AGM.

Gloria and her team (including me) are being challenged again by the Ultra left extremists and their supporters. It is really important that branches turn up on the day to support us.

I think that everyone knows that this year will be a tough one for us and for all our members. General and local elections, Public sector cuts, redundancies, privatisation – possible attacks on the union itself. Now more than ever we need to stand together and be united.

Gloria and her team (IMO) have been very successful in building a strong, effective union – now is not the time to risk the union falling into the hands of the Ultra left and their inexperienced hands.

So don’t take the risk, turn up and vote –

The Holiday Inn, Coram Street, WC1N 1HT, 10am 3rd February 2010.

If you haven’t registered already – contact the Regional Office on 020 7535 6612

Petition: Don’t hold an Election Until 2010

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Not Hold a General election before 2010".

"In order to have the time to fully implement its manifesto commitments and fulfil its electoral mandate the Prime Minister should consider waiting until 2010 before holding a general election".

In response to Tory spam on this blog (and others) to sign the Petition at the 10 Downing Street site calling for a “general election in 2007”, I have created the above petition. It was rejected once for being “political” and having “duplicates” so I have had to change it. It was approved this afternoon and so far it has one signature on it – Me!

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/GenElection2010/

and the answer to the question is no, I haven’t got anything better to do…..
