James Keir Hardie - 120 Years since his election as 1st ever Labour MP (booklet from 2012)

I was really pleased that I was recently able to respond to a request by the Keir Hardie Society (via a former UNISON colleague) for a pdf copy of the booklet issued in 2012 to mark the 120th anniversary of Keir Hardie's election. He was elected in 1892 for West Ham South and was the first Labour MP in the UK.

The Keir Hardie Society have now put the pdf on their website where it can be downloaded in full (12 pages on his life and times)

Many thanks to officers from Newham Council's Archives and Local Studies Library for sending me the pdf.

We must repeat the Keir Hardie history tour of Stratford Town Hall and High street that we organised to mark the actual anniversary on 4 July 2012 (West Ham Labour Party and Newham Labour Unions) https://www.johnslabourblog.org/2012/07/keir-hardie-first-labour-mp-120th.html

From the archives...."We have to take risks in politics. Nobody, repeat nobody really thought that Jeremy would win the leadership race, so humble pie should be partaken in huge chunks by those who now predict disaster for the Party. We have a capable, personable, pragmatic and intelligent leader with a huge democratic mandate.

A little while ago I said at a meeting that the progressive left mostly agree on our goals but cannot agree on the timetable and the way to get there. There is an opportunity now to get a Prime Minister elected who can actually get us there a lot sooner than anybody else thought possible and who deserves their chance to deliver".

Better ask Santa to get you a new crystal ball for Christmas...!

This is all of course high risk, it could all be a flash in the pan and we may crash and burn. But to win in 2020 was always going to be a tall order. We have to take risks in politics. Nobody, repeat nobody really thought that Jeremy would win the leadership race, so humble pie should be partaken in huge chunks by those who now predict disaster for the Party. We have a capable, personable, pragmatic and intelligent leader with a huge democratic mandate.

You left out (for some reason) first line "This is all of course high risk, it could all be a flash in the pan and we may crash and burn".

Yep, I pretty much still agree with all these remarks from September 2015. https://www.johnslabourblog.org/2015/09/jeremy-corbyns-leaders-speech-to-labour.html

Not much evidence of you eating much of that large slice of pie John.

Nope. I was (for a change) pretty spot on with my "prediction".

Selective and incomplete quoting is being silly
