Big Mac Uncovered – McDonald’s isn’t loving Unions

(Hat-tip thingy to Tom P). No surprise here – McDonalds is taking part in a rear guard action in the States against a new “union friendly” law regarding recognition agreements called the “Employee Free Choice Act”. The SIEU are running a compaign to try and see them off.

McDonald's isn't lovin' free choice for its employees. The fast food giant is reportedly organizing its restaurant owners to oppose the Employee Free Choice Act. McDonald's has reportedly even formed an "internal response team...to actively participate in the opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act."

McDonald's has more than 600,000 employees in the US, many of whom earn less than $10/hour. But last year its CEO took home more than $13 million.

Now McDonald's leadership is actively organizing to prevent its employees from standing up for themselves at work.

Write to McDonalds and say employees need the Employee Free Choice Act - we'll send your letters to McDonald's headquarters to make sure they get the message.

Maybe send a letter to the British Head office expressing your concerns and while you are at it ask when McDonalds are going to recognise unions in the UK?

I've seen alot of adverts around lately about the great advantages of a "McJob," waxing lyrical about how well the staff are treated etc.. If they treat the staff so well then they should have no reason to oppose unions surely

Hi Yeahh
You are absolutely right. Now, unions are not perfect. But the only reason why companies such as McDonalds act against us is that they know that we will try to make them not only pay their staff decent wages but also aim to make sure that they are treated with dignity and respect. Soon there will be generations of McWorkers who hate the way they were treated. Not good for the company prospects me thinks?

No matter how “genuine” the intentions of "decent" companies are about how to treat their staff unless you have a proper independent union to counter balance management then you will get unfairness, mistrust, bullying, discrimination and discord. Like night follows day.

To "counter balance management"...you really are a 70s dinosaur. Even you can see the difference between someone frying beef burgers and the CEO of a multi billion $ company? You are ofetn as bovine as the burgers in your views.

Hi Anon
Nothing wrong with 70’s dinosaurs – me I just love Abba! Don’t you think that people need at times help, advice and support at work? Is there is no such thing as bullying managers or unfairness at work? Just a thought!
