West Ham Parish Church (All Saints) Remembrance Sunday 10th November 2019

This morning I attended yet another beautiful Remembrance Sunday service at the historic 12th Century West Ham Parish Church. I am a local West Ham Ward Councillor but I was there today to represent Newham Council as Deputy Mayor together with Deputy Cabinet lead for Children Service's, Cllr Carleene Lee-Phakoe (who had brought her delightful 11 year old daughter) and our Council's Chief Legal Officer, Daniel Fenwick.

There was soldiers from our local regiment 7 Rifles present and other voluntary groups with a number of former military veterans proudly wearing their medals including Cllr Winston Vaughan,  who served in the British Army during the Aden Emergency.

The Rev’d Canon Alex Summers conducted the service and gave a moving sermon during which he mentioned how he and his young family had visited the graves of his relatives who died in battle during the first world war. He made an important point that will future generations with the passage of time forget what has happened in these Wars?

We all hope not. If we forget how horrible and wasteful war is then it is more likely to occur again (and again).

West Ham on tour: Peterborough, Hull, Cities & Westminster and Chipping Barnet

This morning West Ham Labour members met up outside Stratford Station to go to the launch rally of Labour candidate, Gordon Nardell QC, in the Cities and Westminster seat. This was a packed rally with guest speakers, Shami Chakrabarti and Kier Starmer.

The Labour Party has asked West Ham to support Cities and Westminster in the General election and our Chair of West Ham CLP estimates that we had about 25 of our members attending the rally and the canvass afterwards.

After the canvass I went to the "Big Unions Campaign" launch with West Hammer UNISON member Mumtaz Khan, in Chipping Barnet, of trade union lawyer, Emma Whysall, who only lost out by just over 300 votes in the 2017 General election.

Our UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis, was there as well as London Mayor, Sadiq Khan. After this rally I went on a UNISON canvass team with our General secretary, Assistant General Secretary, National Labour officers and National Chair of Young Labour, Miriam Mirwitch. We got absolutely soaked but had a successful canvass in (believe it or not) "Union Street"!

My last call was to a resident who was a traditional Labour supporter who felt very torn about who to support this time. However, she was so impressed that the Party had turned up on her doorstep on such a wet and horrible day that she was willing to give us the benefit of doubt and vote for Emma.

Result!

Our West Ham Labour Candidate, Lyn Brown, had also been out "on the knocker" supporting Labour candidates in Hull and Peterborough.

Launch of Cities & Westminster & Big Unions Campaign in Chipping Barnet (we must win marginals to form Government)

Tomorrow (Saturday 9 November) West Ham Labour members are going to support our key marginal Cities & Westminster campaign launch. Meet at STRATFORD STATION (outside main ticket barrier in concourse) at 9.30 to travel to together to Westminster Napier Hall, Hide Place, London SW1P 4NJ, UK for 10.30am. Followed by canvassing.

Shami Chakrabarti and Kier Starmer will be supporting new candidate Gordon Nardell at the launch,

Later that day there is a "Big Unions Campaign" in Chipping Barnet starting at 1.30pm. Meet at Chipping Barnet Library, 3 Stapylton Road, EN5 4QT. Trade union lawyer Emma Whysall is the candidate who only lost out by just over 300 votes in 2017

UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis will be present in Chipping Barnet, as will London Mayor Sadiq Khan

As you can see from images both Cities and Westminster/Chipping Barnet are winnable marginals. We need to win all our marginals to elect Jeremy as our Prime Minister and form a Labour Government. Some marginals will be won or lost by a handful of votes. Do not allow Boris Johnson to win by failing to campaign in our marginal seats.

Happy Birthday Bolshevik Revolution, Trotsky &... Grayee!

Today is the 102nd anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution (also known as the October Revolution due to the Russian Gregorian Calendar ) and it is also Leon Trotsky's 140th birthday as well.

This morning at the start of a 5 hour budget meeting the elected representatives of the Peoples Republic of Newham also offered Grayee birthday best wishes (in return for cream cakes)

Retirement meal for UNISON Labour Movement Hero Keith Birch

This evening we had a meal to celebrate and thank our UNISON Labour Link National Secretary, Keith Birch, upon his retirement. Keith also represented UNISON on the Labour Party NEC for many years.

Keith is a true Labour Movement hero who has done his level best to bring together our Union and our Labour Party.

He has always served the movement with great dignity and integrity and he will be sorely missed.

Except I am sure that we have not seen the last of Keith and in this general election he will be busy doing his bit to bring about a Labour Government.

London Labour Unions General Election mobilisation event at UNISON centre

This evening I chaired a meeting of London Labour Union organisers at the UNISON centre in Euston. It had originally been intended to be a trade union consultation on the London Mayoral manifesto for May 2020. However, following the calling of the general election, it was widened to involve organisers from the main trade union affiliates. It has all been at bit last minute so apologies to affiliates who were not invited or unable to come at short notice.

Our first speaker was Joe Cox from national "Labour Unions"who spoke about how important it was in order to preserve basic workers rights in this country to have a Labour Government elected. UNISON London Political Secretary, Steve Terry, explained how the unions in London will divide marginal seats amongst themselves in order to offer support.

UNISON regional secretary, Maggi Ferncombe, in response to questions, spoke about the guidance that all unions will be sending out to their branches on what they can do legally during the campaign to stop falling foul of the anti-trade union legislation that deliberately seeks to prevent us from supporting Labour.

Ffion Meagher from London Labour Policy gave us a briefing on the Mayoral/GLA manifesto consultation process. Once we get this general election over with we need in London to  jump straight into this Mayoral election.

Our final speaker was London Assembly member (and my long standing Newham comrade), Unmesh Desai, who was standing in for Karen Buck MP, who was stuck in Parliament voting for a new Speaker. He gave a rousing speech about how vital it was to win this election and to re-elect Sadiq.

My final comments to meeting was that many of us here will have suffered in real terms 20-30% cuts in their pay since the last Labour government in 2010. In order to increase pay and have a fair economy, we need to win this this general election.

However, the result will be decided by a couple of dozen marginal seats. Some of which we will win or lose by a handful of votes. If the 40 of us here tonight went to a marginal to campaign in one session alone, we may identify or persuade 5 or 6 voters to come out and vote Labour and win that marginal.

Imagine what we could do in 10 or 100 sessions....

General Election: Support Cities and Westminster marginal

The London Labour Party has asked West Ham CLP to support nearby marginals such as Cities of London & Westminster. We are arranging a grid of campaign events to encourage our activists to play their part in winning and defending our marginals.

In the meanwhile, if our activists can support the following campaign events, that would be great! We will be advising all our members on future campaign venues on a weekly basis. There are a number of marginals that we should support.

To form a Labour Government we must win all our marginals. Some of which we could win or lose by just a handful of votes. West Ham members can make a big difference to these results.

"Mike Ashley blocks Labour councillor from Sports Direct board meetings after Corbyn row"

Hat tip Laura Onita Telegraph

"Sports Direct tycoon Mike Ashley has blocked a Labour councillor from joining the retailer’s board meetings after a spat with Jeremy Corbyn.

The billionaire wrote to John Gray, who is also the vice-chair of the Local Authority Pension Fund Forum (LAPFF), to say that he could no longer attend Sports Direct’s board meeting in December.

It comes after the Labour leader accused Mr Ashley of taking advantage of the UK’s “corrupt system” in a blistering attack on capitalism on Thursday.

Corbyn had labelled Mr Ashley a "bad boss", accused him of not paying staff properly and said he had an exploited workforce.

Sports Direct hit back in the letter to Mr Gray on Friday, saying Mr Corbyn has a "complete lack of understanding" and arguing that many successful retailers had worked their way up from nothing.

The letter, from the retailer’s legal boss Tom Piper, said: “It was disappointing to read in the press yesterday the personal and unfounded attacks against Mr Ashley made by Jeremy Corbyn.”

“In line with Mr Corbyn’s complete lack of understanding of the state of UK retail, he should be reminded that the sector is a huge employer for the nation, and that it is one of the few sectors where there is no glass ceiling.

“Indeed as an example many senior management members of staff at Sports Direct, past and present, started on the shop floor. Thus his views on Mike Ashley and Sports Direct contradict his socialist utopia.”

Mr Ashley, who is Sports Direct’s founder and chief executive, said he would welcome outsiders at board meetings following criticism over working conditions and how the company is run at its annual gathering with shareholders in September.

Mr Gray, who was at the meeting and is also a Labour councillor for the London borough of Newham, wrote to Mr Ashley nine days later to say he would like to take him up on his offer and an agreement was reached.

Responding to Sport's Direct's U-turn, Mr Gray said: "I'm really disappointed. We have made critical but constructive comments about the governance arrangement of Sports Direct over the years, which we believe is unsatisfactory; why the organisation got in trouble over awful labour rights, is it symptom of wider problem; the massive £600m bill; the accountants who walked off.

"I've had engagement with a number of large companies over the years. I happen to be a Labour concillor but in my role as vice-chair, I represent the pension funds. I have never been challenged in that capacity.

"I get it, there is an election and it's a crazy world but our [LAPFF] chair is an independent councillor, so if there's a problem with me, which I don't accept, then what about he asks our chairman to attend?"

But on Friday Sports Direct’s Mr Piper said: “The board cannot, as a matter of good governance, allow an observer to attend board meetings where there is such a clear conflict of interest between the two parties.”

LAPFF represents 80 local authority pension funds with assets of £250bn. Collectively, the organisation represents the retirement plans for 4 million UK citizens.

Sports Direct was criticised by MPs in 2016 for “Victorian” working conditions after an investigation uncovered workers at its Shirebrook warehouse being paid below minimum wage and penalised for taking breaks.

Mr Corbyn promised on Thursday to go after some of Britain’s richest people in a bid to position the Labour Party as being on the side of the “many not the few”.

It came as the Labour leadership appeared to endorse a call to effectively outlaw billionaires.

As well as Mr Ashley, the Labour leader also singled out Crispin Odey, who runs one of the country’s largest hedge funds; media mogul Rupert Murdoch; the Duke of Westminster, a major land owner; and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, boss of energy firm Ineos.

Sir Jim, the Duke and Mr Ashley contribute an estimated £167m to the Exchequer each year.
