Walter Tull: First Black Officer & Footballer

There will be the launch of a new biography about Black British Football and First World War Military hero, Walter Tull.

The book is called Walter Tull, (1888-1918), Officer, Footballer by Phil Vasili.

Check out this amazing story on Wikipedia here. Despite being brought up following the death of his parents in a Bethnal Green Children’s home he not only became the 2nd Black football player but went on in the First World War to become the first Black commissioned Army officer. Walter volunteered to join the army late 1914 and was killed in action in 1918.

I wonder how many members of the BNP have relatives who served their country as well as Walter and what do they make not only of his patriotism but also his ultimate sacrifice?

He has one up on Jack Straw's Dad then?

Yes, and he volunteered for front line duty unlike Griffin's Dad or many Tories who "had a good war" and profiteered from the war.

For all you know he was Tory...

tory toff basher said...

maybe - but he's no toff

clearly he wasn't a member of the working classes either...as for the small minded comment on Tory profiteers you may remember Churchill was an arch Tory. Mountbatten and the Duke of Edinburgh also fought with distinction. Class has no bearing on patriotism.

tory toff basher,

don't think Blair may have "profiteered" from the Iraq invasion?

It is obvious it was one element in establishing his global reputation.

so you think blair only started the war for the money?

I think that he committed this country to that conflict for a lot of reasons. As it is evident that Blair was/is more concerned with his own place in history than anything else, and as it is now blatantly clear that there were no WMDs, it seems to me to be clear that he believed he would "profit" (not so much financially, but by reputation on the World stage) from following Bush into Iraq.

Mike you are dead right! I think the other outstanding feature of the recent wars Labour has comitted us to is Gordon Brown's conversion to the armed forces. He famously visited the MOD on just one occasion when he was Chancellor,b and the lack of equipment, stretch in personnel etc is directly attributable to him and the funding choices he made. However he is now very clearly feeling some terrible pangs of anguish at being faced directly with the deaths and injuries stemming from his policy, and I suspect he is having trouble sleeping at night. This is one politician who is having to deal directly with the consequences of own lack of foresight. I think his declaration that after being PM he will devote himself to charitable work is evidence of this. This doesn't however absolve him from the fact that he was wrong to have starved the forces of funds in the way that he did. He splashed public largesse on all his own pet priorities and bloated Government but critically failed the forces. How does he sleep at night? Very poorly! He will live with the terrible consequences of his period as Chancellor for the rest of his life - the fact that he ruined the economy is frankly the least of his problems.

You will be hard pushed to find anyone in the Forces who has a bad word to say about Mrs.Thatcher. Sadly the same is not true of Blair or Brown with quite some justification. Four former chiefs of the Defence staff have now criticsed this Labour administration and many serving and former soldirs and officers. Sadly Brown has found out too late how his own actions have exposed our troops to unecessary danger - he has more of a conscience than Blair and is certainly having trouble sleeping now. I fear that trying to atone for it through charitable work will never ever work. I thought it was interesting when the parent of a soldier killed in Iraq war refused to shake Blair's hand and accused him of having blood on his hands a momentary flicker of understanding flashed across his face. What a tragedy.

@ Anon 18:43

Indeed, I agree; is that offered up to negate the points made about Blair?

235 killed in Afghanistan - we should have been a bit better prepeared for this. Drivibng around in Snatch landrovers and overstretch are a joke.

What a complete load of old twaddle and nonsense. Don't you realise how silly and pompous such remarks appear? How on earth do you know how people really feel? BTW Remember how Thatcher and the Tories were attacked for running down the defence of the Falklands therefore encouraging the Argentines to attack? Are you in any way related to airport anon?

Mike, I am surprised at you.

Mike Law said...

What? No rousing defence of Blair?

I love your style of reasoning: It's okay for you to tell people how and what they think and you are an expert on what the Tories are deviously hiding from the rest of the world, but no-one can dare offer an opinion that doesn't fit in with your drone-like devotion to the Labour Party (the national Party I can understand to a degree, but your defence of Wales I just cannot fathom).

Surprised at me? You don't even know me.

Hi Mike

So now you believe that airport anon has ESP and knows what people are thinking?

also people who live in greenhouses shouldn't throw bricks methinks.

Mike Law said...

Much like you have a similar ability and can tell what the Tories intend to do.

Repeating your point doesn't make it any more valid.

I stick to what I've stated before; you'll make an interesting councillor.

Hi Mike

Well, at least I don't have to rely on personal abuse being the basis for all my arguments! (one or two maybe)

Mike Law said...

Do you actually read what you write?

Remember the use of the word "dipstick"?

You're a gem.

Taken from your "Reclaiming our Union" blogpost: [on Cameron and H&S] -
"Obviously he thinks that our pragmatic, common sense laws and regulations should not apply to Old Etonions - only all of us who are not millionaires."

What were you saying about ESP?

John Gray said...

Hi Mike

Wrong post it was
