Malcolm Campbell

I was sorry to hear at today’s UNISON Regional Finance Team meeting about the death yesterday of Croydon Local Government Branch secretary, Malcolm Campbell.

I did not agree politically with Malcolm who was a strong supporter of UNISON United Left. He was obviously a committed activist in UNISON and the Labour Party. I had always found him to be polite and reasonable.

My sympathies are with his family.

Nicely judged, John.

I know you didn't share Malcolm's politics but it's at times like this that its important we share and show our common humanity.

Good on you.

Hi Les
I didn’t know Malcolm that well and was not a mate of his but two brief memories

1. His love and knowledge of Shakespeare - he once outside Hamilton House before a typically fraught Regional Council AGM came up to me and corrected a misquotation of mine from Hamlet – at length – apparently word perfect

2. At NDC Conference a few years back when the record was playing and nearly everyone in the Labour Link disco was singing and dancing to the record “Now I’m a union man” he told me how much he disliked this song (to my surprise!) since its lyrics were actually disrespectful to trade unionists. When you look at the lyrics they are a bit iffy but like on many things I could see his point but not quite agree.
