Reminder: “Total Out of Burma” Protests tomorrow Sat 24 Nov

Tomorrow (Saturday 24 November) is a national day of action organised by “Total out of Burma”.

They are organising protests across the country (see list below of those in London) outside the French Company “Total” Petrol stations.

"Total” run a massive off shore gas field in Burma and gives the military regime hundreds of millions of dollars each year in taxes. The junta use this money to oppress their own people.

I hope to be present at one of the Newham protests.

While democracy in Burma is vital, people should recall that Aung San Suu Kyi father was of Major-General Aung San. Who invited the Japanese into Burma during WW2 and was presented with the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japenese Emperor.

I dont blame her but many Bermese know at great cost Gen Aug San's actions

While it is right to champion democracy in Burma

we must be careful not to fall into the trap of hierachy of compassion.

What about rthe genocide in Dafur, we have allowed the right (especially American) to dominate this for far to long.

To his credit even John McDonnell has raisd the plight of Dafur. But will you find Dafur on the agenda of any major British Trade Union

But where is the left organising boycotts or marches

Of course you could claim its not Genocide and join George Galloway in denying it is happening.

Hi anon

Yes, it is of course one of history’s ironies that the current Burmese military dictatorship are direct descendants of Japanese military fascists trainees. It is one of Burma’s enduring problems.

However, Aung San Suu Kyi, regardless of her father, is a democratically elected leader of her county who has been under arrest for the last 12 years (and prevented from visiting her dying husband).

Many (not all by all means) of the left are not interested in attacking anyone but America and the west!

With regards to “Dafur”, what is the left argument? Pass a motion? Blame everyone but not do anything?

Why on earth does anyone think that a maverick loser such as John McDonnell could achieve anything?

Quite right about Galloway, its only genocide if they don’t pay his taxi or airline bills.
