Gordon thanks Irene for recruiting 257 UNISON members!

Newham local government branch officer (and UNISON NEC Labour Link member) Irene Stacey was yesterday awarded the TUC lay officers "Organising Award" by the Prime Minister. Hat tip to UNISON

TUC President Alison Shepherd noted, “40 of those new recruits - many of them minority ethnic women and many working part-time - have gone on to become union reps or contacts themselves. And Ms Stacey's secret? "I always carry recruitment forms with me," she says, "whether it's one or 10. Because if you sign up just one member, that's one member who's got UNISON protection."

I am sure that any trade union rep will be impressed by Irene recruiting so many members in one year, especially since I believe that Newham’s membership density was pretty high beforehand. Well done Irene!

Knowing Irene, I have no doubt that she would have also had a quick word with Gordon about some local trade union issues!

I would sincerely hope that someone is having a word with Labour Link about Michael's treatment. Presumably Michael now has 1.3257 million members behind him now? I do recall that the last time Newham UNISON was attacked by the employer much was made of it in the region -yet this seems to be of interest to bloggers only?

Hi Anon
Yes, I am absolutely sure that UNISON and Labour Link are very much involved in trying to resolve this issue – also just seen email about public meeting next week in Stratford.

I am pleased at Irene's award. It would be really interesting to see how Challenge X has increased recruitment over and above the norm in her branch in previous years and indeed in others. Surely UNISON will produce statistics showing what recruitment rates were like before -in individual branches -and now, with Challenge X. That would certainly motivate people to take up the challenge.

Hi Anon
Yes, it was good news to read about Irene’s award. I am not sure that publicly publishing all branch recruitment results is necessarily going to always motivate? Maybe concentrate on praising successful recruiters while concentrating organising resources on branches that do not recruit as well. However, this must not penalise branches who do recruit…..

I actually think Irene Stacey does a fantastic job as Branch secretary in her branch. She always has the time to listen and deal with peoples issues. She is a real people person. She signs members up because she tells the truth..and what you see is what you get with Irene... No Plastic promises..just the truth.. Believe me, and i know her personally...Irene is doing Everything possible to help the situation within her branch. She isnt one of these loud mouth brash "lets go bash em" people. she is the very strong and will do things the correct way. The region ARE behind Michael and supprting him all the way..
