Double West Ham canvass for Sadiq Khan & Labour

This has been a busy Labour Movement few days with Workers Memorial Day on Friday, TUC Regional Council AGM yesterday (followed by my first ever visit to the Victoria & Albert Museum - which deserves a future post) and today, campaigning for Sadiq Khan as our Labour London Mayor and all London Assembly Labour candidates in West Ham ward.

My ward Councillor colleague, John Whitworth and I (both of us UNISON members) did a double morning and afternoon canvass and street surgery in our ward, West Ham.

The weather was wet in the beginning so we canvassed some of our low rise blocks, which meant lots of up and down communal stairs. Great exercise, who needs to join a gym if you are a Labour Party activist? In the later part of the afternoon the rain stopped and the sun came out which was lovely. The blossom may have largely gone but the greenery is very lush in the sunshine after rain.

We had full English breakfasts for lunch at the Olympic cafe in West Ham Lane (we sneaked into Stratford ward).

Highlights of the day was a long discussion with an elderly resident, who was originally from Latvia and by coincidence, I had watched last night a film called "The Rifleman", which was about the dreadful first world war (and aftermath) experiences of a Latvia soldier. The resident was an ethnic Russian, whose father had been a prisoner of war during world war 2. It was unclear due to language difficulties who his father was taken prisoner by.

I took a wrong turn and got locked into a rear communal garden, where you needed a key to get out (which is a risk in these blocks) and had to be rescued by John W.

We had 161 contacts and I had some very good political discussions on local and national issues. While I did not win everyone over to Labour, the response overall was very good. The depth of support and loyalty to the Labour Party by so many residents is simply humbling.

TUC London, Eastern & South East Regional Council AGM 24

(Text largely from my twitter account @grayee) "At @The_TUC LESE AGM in Congress House, London (home of the British Trade union movement) which I am attending as a @unisonglr delegate.

After a minutes silence to remember comrades who have died in past year, the AGM starts with a Video message from @The_TUC General Secretary @nowak_paul & now verbal report from @TUC_LESE regional Secretary @GurneySam.

Bit of a shock that TUC Executive Council are considering whether they should remortgage Congress House & refurbish it to modern standards or sell it & move elsewhere.

Next @The_TUC President & GS @fbunational @MattWrack keynote speaker on ""meeting the challenges & organising to win". Matt speaks passionately about 7th anniversary of #Grenfell, the vote winning importance of @UKLabour #NewDealforWorkingPeople & 40th anniversary of #Minersstrike

@The_TUC Women's officer @louloupound gives update on workplan to build union capacity to tackle sexual harassment in workplace. Nikki does not dodge the fact that we need in our own #LabourMovement to get our House in order & address sexual harassment & discrimination.

Next update was by @TUC_LESE officer Adrian Ryan on the London union learning project Unionlearn

Now election results for @TUC_LESE executive council and elections for President, Vice Presidents, treasurer, SOC & auditors. New President @RMTunion Kathy Mazur thanks Jim Kelly & then moves RMT motion 1 "A better railway for London, SE and the East of England"

Motion passed unanimously. Now 2nd RMT motion "No more P&Os: A fair pay agreement for the ferry sector". Also passed unanimously.

Update by @TUC_LESE Laurie Heselden on "New Deal for Working People". Making it clear that this is a trade union policy as much as @UKLabour

Following some rather odd & negative comments from a couple of delegates Our @unisontheunion delegation leader @organiserjo makes the point in Q&A that the relationship of @TUC_LESE &
@UKLabour @labourunionsuk & the positive work that is done. While President @unitetheunion Jim Kelly gave a ringing endorsement of @SadiqKhan for his support 4 workers

West Ham welcomes Sadiq Khan as London Labour Mayoral Candidate

Today we met up with Cllr James Beckles in West Ham Ward (Newham, London) who is standing as a "Labour List" candidate in next months London Assembly Elections. He was with the East London & City candidate, Unmesh Desai and we had a special guest turn up - our London Labour Mayoral candidate, Sadiq Khan.

As well as East Ham MP, Stephen Timms, Newham Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz, councillors and many local Party activists from across the borough (including the one and only John Saunders). Footballers in the Park also stopped to join us and listen.

After short speeches from James, Unmesh and Sadiq, we split up into canvass teams. Two teams went to canvass West Ham while the others left for Forest Gate South.

I led one team of 4 canvassers and was pleased that we had 46 contacts, the overwhelming majority being solid Labour. I was also really pleased when a local resident came up to us and explained she was a new Labour Party member and wanted to volunteer to deliver leaflets. She explained that she had been a Labour supporter for many years but had only just joined the Party in order to help get rid of this "rotten Tory Government".

After coffee in the Sawmill, I stopped off to deliver leaflets to volunteers and took some photos of trip hazards that had been brought to my attention as case work. A good day.

UNISON Labour Link Officer report: GLR Housing Associations branch AGM 2024

Tomorrow is my UNISON branch AGM and I have submitted (late) my written report below as the branch Labour Link officer. I will also make a verbal report at the AGM and take any questions.

""Labour Link" is part of UNISON and it is a political fund that supports the Labour Party which all members can choose to support. It also campaigns and lobbies the Labour Party to adopt UNISON policies. Trade unions helped form the Labour Party and we are all part of a wider "Labour movement family".

There are around 1000 members of our branch who are members of the UNISON Labour Link and many are also members of the Labour Party. Our branch Labour Link members are delegates to local Labour Parties, they campaign on behalf of the Party and attend conferences and other events. Labour Link also holds training sessions for members interested in becoming Councillors or even MPs.

In the last year, we have organised Labour Link members to go and support Labour Party candidates in the recent successful Parliamentary by elections. We have also started campaigning for the Labour Party in the forthcoming General and London Mayoral elections.

In particular we are explaining to members and voters about the importance of the Labour Party's "New Deal for Working People", which if they are elected will result in employment rights against unfair dismissal from day one, a real "living wage" for all and introduction of fair pay agreements, the banning of zero hour contacts and of fire & rehire (and many, many other worker friendly policies).

The next major elections will be on 2 May 2024. UNISON member Sadiq Khan is restanding as London Mayor, while many other UNISON members are candidates in London Assembly seats and in council elections outside London. Please contact me if you wish to join our Labour Link campaign teams (either in person, talking to voters, leafleting or telephone phone banks).

It is very important that Labour has a good result on May 2 since this could even result in the Conservatives calling a general election sooner rather than later and we can start to rebuild our nation with progressive policies such as "New Deal".

May 6 aftermath: Sadiq, Unmesh & Farah win well; Newham Democracy Referendum narrowly loses; Wales keeps Red as does some regions (but crushing by election defeat)

Now I have had some time to recover from electioneering and reflect upon last Thursday 6 May - some thoughts:-

Congratulations on Sadiq being re-elected as London Mayor; Unmesh re-elected as our local City & East Assembly member and Farah winning the by election in East Ham Central with over 52% of vote. Newham turnout was 35% which is by any standards unacceptably poor. We did not get out the Labour vote in Newham that we should have had.

The Newham democracy referendum on replacing the Executive Mayor with a Councillor run committee model was lost by 44% to 56%, which is a shame but the narrow majority shows the concern felt by many residents about such governance arrangements. I supported the "Newham for Change" campaign and hope it will continue to argue for greater democracy and transparency in government, both locally and nationally. Certainly we should support the opposition to the Tory led referendum in October to change Croydon Council into a Mayoral system.

My UNISON colleague Lola came second in the Kent Police and Crime commissioner election, doubling the Labour vote from the previous election & having the highest single candidate vote Labour has ever had in Kent.

I was so pleased that Wales kept "Red" and Labour had one of its best ever assembly votes despite the very high Welsh brexit vote. Unlike the dreadful by election outcome in Hartlepool.

Welsh Labour shows that we can win back our traditional working class base with a left of centre pragmatic socialist programme (and working in partnership with trade unions).

Labour did well in many areas but overall it was not good and we need to get much better, we need to unite around Keir and get our policies across better.

I did suggest at a recent meeting of UNISON Greater London Regional Council officers, where we compared the strong support for Labour in our region and the principality, that perhaps London ought to consider leaving the UK and forming a political union with Wales? It was just a thought....

West Hammers help out in East Ham Central By Election

Yesterday evening I went out on the Labour doorstep with our West Ham MP, Lyn Brown and Cara (the infamous Labour attack dog) to support Farah Nazeer, our Labour candidate in East Ham Central by election on Thursday May 6 (and our London Mayoral Candidate, Sadiq Khan and local East London Assembly member, Unmesh Desai).

We joined local Councillors Susan Masters and Alan Griffiths (Agent). Despite a mixture of sunshine and showers the canvass went really well with pretty extraordinary high levels of Labour support.

We also came across some beautiful urban gardens.

Using the Labour Party mobile "doorstep" appears to work really well. No more soggy paper canvass sheets to try and fill out in the rain.

Vote for London: Vote for Sadiq (and Unmesh): Vote for Labour

It was great to pick up yesterday Labour GLA election leaflets with an East London focus (at long last!). I have dropped off leaflets and road groups (list of addresses to be targeted) to the West Ham and Forest Gate North ward organisers and been delivering to my allocated road groups. Out tomorrow door knocking and phone banking.

West Ham Leaflet & East Ham Canvass for Team Labour: Sadiq, Unmesh, Elly, Bob & Farah

Yesterday was a big day for me. I went (Covid safe)  leafleting and door knocking for the first time in over a year. I have really missed such contact with residents.

After the Workers Memorial Day event during the day, in the evening I went with our MP, Lyn Brown to join Labour Party activists in West Ham ward to leaflet with  our City and East GLA Assembly Candidate Unmesh Desai.

Then Lyn and I joined a canvass team to support the Labour Candidate, Farah Nazeer, who is standing in the East Ham Central by-election also taking place on May 6 . Farah is a fantastic candidate and if elected will make a brilliant councillor.

Farah was joined by Labour Greater London Assembly candidates, Elly Baker and Bob Littlewood and we all went out as a canvassing team wearing masks, keeping social distancing and standing away from doors.

Slightly to my surprise (and relief)  I did not witness any concern or complaints about us knocking on doors.

Back on the Campaign Trail for Labour in West Ham

Today I went into the attic to retrieve Labour placards, UNISON Labour Link clip boards and my agent "campaign bag" (placards, marker pens, cord, FB & drop keys, tapes etc). Due to Covid it has been over a year since I had last done any "physical" campaigning work for Labour.

Government guidance on political campaign under Covid has been relaxed and now allow for leaflet distribution and even door knocking. There is of course, still strict safety guidance on numbers of volunteers out together and social distancing.

I had picked up leaflets to be delivered to the ward I represent (West Ham) on the Council and started delivering (by myself). My ward Councillor colleagues and Labour activists have also been out delivering so have other wards.

It was great to be "out and about" in the ward, enjoying all the spring blossom while getting fit going up and down communal stairs in our blocks.  I was able to note Communal repairs and maintenance issues which I will take up with the Council.

It is so important that we re-elect our Greater London Assembly (GLA) Labour Mayor, Sadiq Khan, our local Assembly Member, Unmesh Desai and the Labour London List Assembly members. For example in Newham we would have found it really difficult to deliver on our "1000 homes at social rent" manifesto pledge without the Sadiq's GLA grant of £107 million.

While I will continue to leaflet and telecanvass, I do look forward to knocking on my constituents' doors, being held to account and speaking directly to residents as soon as it is safe to do so.

UNISON and Labour Unions phone bank with David Lammy MP

Picture collage from last night's "dialogue" phone bank organised by Labour Unions and Greater London UNISON Labour Link.

David Lammy MP gave us a quick briefing beforehand on how important it is that we have a Labour Mayor & Assembly in London to protect Londoners against some of the excesses of Tory Government misrule.

He spoke very movingly about why he is such a passionate UNISON member mainly because of the support the union gave to his Mum when she had serious employment issues.

David also made a valid point that while many of us (Labour Party activists) prefer to campaign by knocking on doors rather than ringing people, you probably end up speaking to more people by phone than "on the knocker".

I could only spend 45 minutes last night on the actual phone bank but did manage to gain 7 contacts which is probably more than I would have gathered if I had been knocking on doors.

(I am pleased that I now have "Sadiq Khan for Mayor" leaflets which I will be delivering over the bank holiday weekend)

Mayor Sadiq Khan speaks to London UNISON Labour Link

It was great to have this supportive video from Sadiq at our Greater London Labour Link regional forum today.

Many thanks to all our speakers including Labour GLA report by Assembly member Len Duvall; National Labour Link by Julian Cooke and TULO/Labour Unions by Joe Cox.

Thank also to our vice chair, Yvonne Green, for chairing the meeting during motions (where I moved my branch motion on the NHS Pay and also spoke against the motion on open selections).

We also agreed to support our Committee member, Lola Oyewusi, who is standing as the Labour Candidate to be the next Kent Police and Crime Commissioner on May 6.

Newham Labour Unions telecanvass with Assembly Member Unmesh Desai - Tuesday 2 March 6pm-7.30pm

On Tuesday 2 March 6-7.30pm trade union activists in Newham have organised a joint telecanvassing session in support of Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan and our Labour Assembly members.

East London and City Assembly member, Unmesh Desai, will be in attendance.

The elections in May 6th are only 68 days away and as much as I prefer other forms of campaigning, telecanvassing is the only thing allowed at the moment due to Covid.

Check out this article in Labour List by Sadiq on the positive difference trade unions make and his commitment to work with us.

Unfortunately since we have to use Labour Party software programme called "dialogue" only Party members can participate.

Can members to try and log into dialogue prior to joining the meeting at this session. Go to try and log in to https://dialogue.labour.org.uk/login first? People not being able to log in because they've not used the Labour online systems before is a common problem and usually eats into training time.

People should attempt to use an email address that they think they might've used in the past and then click "forgot password" in order to reset. If this leads to no response in an email inbox or junk folder, then they're going to need their membership number in order to link their email to their membership and that can be done at the following link https://login.labour.org.uk/activate

If there are still issues, they'll need to contact campaigns technology (email labourmembership@labour.org.uk or call on 0345 092 2299 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).

All West Ham Labour party members should have received an invite and I hope that East Ham will be able to do the same.

I hope that similar sessions will take place at least fortnightly until the election.

All Labour Party trade union members welcome regardless whether their union is affiliated to the Party or not.

London UNISON Labour Link phone bank with Abena Oppong-Asare MP

Photo (hat tip @iamritabegum) from tonight's Greater London UNISON Labour Link sponsored phone bank for the London Mayor and Assembly elections. I was pleased as elected Chair of the regional Labour Link committee to welcome long standing UNISON activist Abena to address the session on the importance of re-electing Labour Mayor, Sadiq Khan and a Labour Assembly victory in May.

I was also very pleased that we had another old union comrade, TSSA ringer, Sam Tarry MP also present!

Many thanks for UNISON @JackTMPhipps for organising.

Next week in Newham the Labour unions are planning another telephone bank session with our local East London & City Labour candidate, Unmesh Desai.

Having a dialogue with West Ham residents

This morning there was a Newham wide Labour telecanvassing session using the Labour Party "dialogue" software to call residents about their views about Covid and the forthcoming local elections in May.

I don't particularly like telecanvassing and much prefer going door knocking and speaking to people face to face. Obviously this cannot happen at the moment so the only means of direct political canvassing is via the phone using a special software tool called "dialogue". .

You need a landline (preferred since cheaper for the Labour Party who pays all costs) or mobile phone and a PC, laptop or tablet.

I was phoning residents in West Ham which is the ward I represent as a Councillor. Perhaps it was due to the cold but it was by far the best telephone canvassing session I have had using "dialogue". For understandable reasons many people block or will not pick up calls from anyone they do not recognise.

I was able to speak to a number of residents and had some really good conversations with them. This included those residents who were highly critical of Labour and in particular local Council issues. We have to listen to them to understand their concerns and act upon them where possible.

I was even given by dialogue a "John Gray" to ring in my ward. Alas, he did not pick up the phone to speak to his long lost cousin and namesake. .

Our East London Labour Assembly member, Unmesh Desai, joined us and gave a pep talk on the importance of getting the Labour vote out in Newham. Since the London Mayor and Assembly vote is by proportionate representation (PR) every singe vote will count.

We later spoke and agreed to organise a Labour unions meeting in Newham on how we can help achieve this.

"The case for rent controls"

I was asked to put the case for rent controls in the latest edition of the Labour Housing Group newsletter here. See below and also in the link the case AGAINST rent controls as well.

"Here are two articles about rent controls. John Gray, former Cabinet Lead for Housing Services in the London Borough of Newham makes the case in favour while Chris Worrall argues against. Further contributions are welcome on what will no doubt remain a contested subject! Paul Martin (Editor) pauljmartin@clara.co.uk

For some time before the General Election in December 2019, I had been exploring with our Council Pension Committee whether we should be investing money in social housing. Our pension officers took their due diligence very seriously and we had a seemingly endless series of meetings and presentations with institutional fund managers and financial advisors.

Nearly all the models included some form of mixed tenure and cross-subsidy of social housing by market or intermediate rents (or sale). I was pleasantly surprised that, despite it being Labour Party policy at the time to have some limited rent controls, most fund managers did not appear to think that this would cause any serious problems with their investments.

Some managers did think it would have serious implications and a small number had no idea that the Party was committed to rent controls and were clearly exercised by any such policy.

I imagine that meeting small, private “buy to let” landlords who are mortgaged to the hilt and still losing money despite charging sky high rents would have told me something very different.

Certainly the historical evidence on the impact of rents controls is mixed. Were “fair rents” in the past set too low and was that the reason for the decline of the private rental sector and its “Rising Damp” reputation?

Or was that a consequence of government subsidy of social housing and home ownership?

Ironically it was David Cameron and a Conservative Government that last imposed UK rent controls, but only on social landlords.

Rent controls are in force in other countries, such as America, Germany and France. Again, there are differing views on the positive and negative consequences.

While there will be problems with any introduction of controls, doing nothing is not an option because the private rental sector is completely out of control in many parts of this country.

While surveys of young professionals often show that they are paying a staggering 50% of their income in rent, it is families who suffer most from high rents.

On top of living in insecure, overcrowded and often poor quality housing, in Newham, East London, 66% of children live in poverty after their parents’ housing costs are taken into account.

I hate to think what these figures will be now due to the impact of Covid-19. Pension funds and other investors expect market rents to carry on growing in excess of inflation.

In all likelihood, today’s affordability crisis will get even worse if nothing is done. Rent controls will only be part of a wider housing solution and a massive expansion of social housing is my preferred option.

However, this is not going happen with a Tory parliamentary majority of 80. So we have until 2 May 2024 (or sooner) to come up with workable solutions.

Rent controls were first introduced to tackle housing problems caused by World War One. Perhaps our modern day Covid emergency will result in their reintroduction.

Greater London UNISON Labour Link telephone bank for Sadiq Khan as Mayor

Yesterday it was good to meet up "virtually" with Sadiq and 7 London Labour Assembly candidates for a UNISON Labour Link sponsored virtual phone bank.

The briefing by Sadiq to us beforehand, just reinforced to me, exactly why we need to protect London from Tory misrule and re-elect him as our Labour Mayor (and also elect all our London Assembly Labour Candidates).

Being London Mayor is the toughest job in UK local government and while we might not agree with him over everything, we need him to be re-elected as our Mayor and for there to be a majority of Labour Assembly members to make progressive politics happen.

Newham is crucial in this election. Since the vote is by proportional representation, every single vote cast will really count.

Only phone bank campaigning is currently allowed due to Covid. As Chair of UNISON Labour Link in Greater London, I need to work with our officers on how we can get more of our UNISON 130,000 members involved in this crucial "dog and bone" campaign..

Greater London UNISON Labour Link AGM 2020 - Re-elected!

I was really pleased this morning that both myself and Yvonne Green were re-elected unopposed as the respective Chair & Vice Chair of Greater London Labour Link committee for the next 2 years. The last two years have been very difficult for all of us in the Labour movement and it was good to have the trust and confidence of a newly elected committee for the next term.

The meeting started on a sad note as we held a minutes silence for former long serving committee member, Ann Jefferson, who has recently passed away. A letter of condolence and offer to pay into a charitable cause has been sent to her son.

UNISON Labour Link works directly within Labour to take UNISON's policies into the heart of the party. In London we affiliate to the Labour Party Region and all 32 Constituency Labour Parties. We have representation on the London Labour regional board and have a network of branch Labour Link officers and CLP delegates. We work closely with other affiliated trade unions.

The committee has a budget which supports a wide range of training and mobilisation events, campaigning and importantly, UNISON members who seek elected office.

It is comprised of directly elected London UNISON members (such as myself and Yvonne) and representatives of our regional self organised groups. All of us are UNISON and Labour Party activists.

At the AGM we had a fantastic and detailed Parliamentary report followed by a Q&A with former London Labour Link activist, now MP for Erith and Thamesmead, Abena Oppong-Asare, who has been recently promoted as Shadow Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury

London Assembly member and leader of the Labour Group, Len Duvall, also gave his report and submitted a 14 page update on the great work that has been done to protect our capital city during the pandemic.

I gave a commitment on behalf of the committee that we are united to do everything possible to re-elect Sadiq Khan as our London Labour Mayor and Labour Assembly members in the election in May 2021.

Once the other business of the meeting had finished in my closing remarks as Chair, I also spoke about how in our workplan we ought to consider in light of Covid-19, how we can prioritise the promotion of the UNISON Ethical Care charter in London in recognition of the personal sacrifice by so many of our most important but vulnerable members.

Vote Early 2021 elections: Sadiq for London

Reforming Private Renting: Sadiq Khan "Making... 7 May a referendum on rent controls"

Some really great policies on reforming our broken housing market in London. In Newham at least 48% of our homes are now privately rented. It is not unusual for a one bed flat to cost at least £1200 per month. 50% of our families live in poverty once you take into account housing costs.

Hat tip http://conciliocomms.com/ -  "The Mayor launched his re-election campaign last week by calling on the Prime Minister to allow rent controls to be introduced if he wins power again. He said that a victory on 7th May would mean Boris could no longer ignore demands for the policy to be introduced as he would be 'ignoring the democratic will of Londoners'.

The Mayor said:

“The case for rent controls is now absolutely undeniable. But Tory ministers have blocked us from introducing our plans for rent controls in London and have simply said no.

“That’s why today I am making the mayoral election on 7 May a referendum on rent controls – showing Londoners that I will stand up for renters. The prime minister will have to give us the powers we need because if he refuses to do so he will be denying the express democratic will of millions of Londoners. And as we have all heard Boris Johnson repeatedly say himself, the democratic will of the people must be respected and it is not for politicians to frustrate it.”

There are 2.4 million private tenants across the capital, spending on average 43% of their income on rent. Between 2010 and 2020 rent costs rose by almost a third in London, and the average private rent for a one-bed home is now more than the average for a three-bed in every other region of England.

The Mayors re-election website is available here with a GLA report on rent controls available here."
