✊ 48 Hours of Madness: Election Day, The Count, and a Bittersweet Victory in West Ham

After weeks and months of meetings, training sessions, leaflet‑folding, and relentless campaigning, the last 48 hours have felt like a lifetime. Election Day on Thursday 7 May, followed by The Count on Friday, pushed all of us to the limit — physically, mentally, emotionally. It became less a campaign and more a temporary way of life.

🌅 Election Day: From Dawn at Stratford Manor to the Last Knock at 9.45pm

I started early outside Stratford Manor polling station in West Ham ward, while my Labour colleagues Adjoa Kwarteng and Sam Mannion covered the others. Apart from one unpleasant encounter with an aggressive, foul‑mouthed Reform supporter, the morning went smoothly.

From there we headed to the campaign office to collect E-Day leaflets and the codes for our smartphones — the lifeline that tells us which Labour voters need a reminder to get to the polls.

Then began the long, punishing slog: street after street, block after block, knocking doors, speaking to residents, leaving leaflets where no one answered. We were kept going by brilliant support from local members including Varghese and Parvin, and the ever‑reliable retiring councillor John Whitworth.

We kept going until 9.45pm, then visited polling stations to check for issues and get a sense of turnout. After a quick drink at the Black Lion, it was home — briefly — before the next ordeal.

🗳️ The Count at ExCeL: A Marathon of Verification, Kangaroos, and Nerves

By 8am on Friday, those of us acting as counting agents for the Mayoral contest were at ExCeL for the briefing. The count began at 9am, and from observing the verification across three wards, it was clear that Labour’s Forhad Hussain was heading for victory. Still, nothing could be taken for granted, and counting agents from all parties had to stay laser‑focused.

Eventually, it was confirmed: Forhad Hussain had won by over 5,000 votes. The Independents came second, the Greens third — despite their confident claims that “only they can win”.

Then came the councillor counts, and this was a different kind of torture. West Ham ward showed strong Labour block votes, but there were hundreds of mixed ballots, where voters split their three votes across parties. Newham’s infamous “Kangaroo” system was used to allocate these — a slow, meticulous, mind‑bending process.

No one had any clear idea who was ahead.

The Long Wait — and a Bitter‑Sweet Result

As we waited, national and London‑wide news filtered in. Labour was having a very bad day. We lost wards and seats. Good comrades were defeated. But we also held ground in key areas.

Finally, at around 8.30pm, the West Ham declaration was called. Candidates and agents were told privately before the public announcement.

It was close.

I was elected. Adjoa was elected. But Sam — a hardworking, experienced campaigner — narrowly missed out, with a Green taking the third seat.

It was a bittersweet moment. Sam took it with grace and professionalism, but politics can be a cruel business. I have no doubt he will return and win a future contest.

🟥 Where We Stand Now

Despite the losses, Labour:

  • Won the Executive Mayor contest decisively

  • Remains the largest single party on Newham Council

  • Outperformed the London anti‑Labour trend in both Newham and neighbouring Redbridge, according to early analysis

It will be tough. It will be messy. But with Forhad as Mayor and a committed Labour group, we can still deliver our ambitious manifesto for Newham.

With a fair wind, next time we’ll wipe the floor with our opponents.

I’ll share the full results once they’re officially published.

Newham Voices: "East End Pubs" December 2023

I have finally got around to reading the December version of "Newham Voices". It has been a busy few weeks.  Lots of good stuff about politics and planning but my eye was caught about this review by Phil Mellows, of a new book called "East End Pubs".

I agree with Phil that it is a shame that the book is only confirmed to pubs in Tower Hamlets and Hackney (I have worked in Towers Hamlets for 30 years, so know a few of their pubs as well). The Newham pub gems mentioned are all my favourites (especially the Eddies and Black Lion).

Tonight, I had some different drinks and a great meal in a Bulgarian bar/cafe in Stratford High Street called Rodina-2, with Labour Party comrades, John Saunders and John Whitworth (we are known in West Ham as the "Three Johns").

I genuinely wonder, that if in the future it survives, the Rodina-2 , will eventually be recognised as the latest version of a traditional "East End" pub? I hope so.

Plaistow North By Election Polling Day (& speaking at Pension conference)

I took yesterday off work for the by election but got tied up in morning with urgent UNISON "fire and rehire" case work. I was able at lunch time to go "knocking up" (knocking on doors of identified Labour Supporters , reminding them of the election and encouraging them to vote) with party colleagues Sofia and Larry. We had a good response but I felt that some residents were being somewhat evasive about their voting intentions. They had changed from previously saying they were Labour supporters to now saying they were "undecided". Not a good sign.

After we had finished that round I had to go back home, change into a suit and rush off to the Bloomsbury Hotel (ironically right next to Congress House) and speak in a Professional Pensions Conference panel debate on the merits of  trustees being "Professional Vs Lay: The Great Pension Scheme Debate". Anyone who knows me would be able to predict which side of the argument I was on and I will post on this another time.

Afterwards back home to Newham, change of clothes into comfy shoes, outdoor clothes, torch and drop key. I took the 58 bus to the committee room and was soon allocated a round with my Councillor colleague Larisa and a Hammersmith & Fulham Labour colleague (also a local Councillor and Chair of Planning) Omid.  It is always difficult to canvass in the dark but we worked very well together as a team. Larisa's russian language skills were particularly helpful. I did not realise how many residents from eastern europe also spoke russian as well as their native language.

I only had 2 "difficult" conversations with residents about Gaza and the Labour Party response but they were respectful and considered. However, again, I was concerned at the number of residents who were now saying they were "undecided" or not voting.

I bumped into some of the the independent landlord party activists outside polling stations and had no problems but they were clearly breaking electoral law by gathering so close and in large numbers. It must have been intimidating for voters.

At the end of our round we joined up with another team and were still out "knocking up" after 9.30pm. Many thanks to activists from Tower Hamlets and Hackney for their support.

After the close of campaigning some of us went to the nearby historic "Black Lion" pub for a drink and a gossip. While we were hopeful of a good result, we thought it was going to be tough night.

Alas, our wonderful Labour Candidate, Akhtharul Alam, did not win on this occasion. It was not his fault in the slightest. The community did punish us over Gazi but there were other issues regarding parking, fly tipping and Anti-social behaviour which we need to address better. While this is clearly a defeat I am confident that Labour can restore trust and win back support in the future.

Newham Voices June 2023: The Black Lion in "Something Brewing"

I enjoyed reading the latest version of the free community newspaper "Newham Voices" https://www.facebook.com/newhamvoices/ over the weekend. The historic Black Lion pub in Plaistow is one of my top 5 favourite pubs in Newham.

It definitely has character and a great beer garden. The service and food is good and there is usually a fresh seafood stall in the car park during busy times. A regular post Labour Party meeting/canvass refreshment point. Many happy memories, some great political discussions and very occasionally, the odd stand up row!

Plaistow West and Canning Town East canvass 3.12.22

On Saturday after my surgery I joined the new Councillor team at the also new ward of Plaistow West and Canning Town East. We were joined by our Greater London Assembly member, Unmesh Desai.

On the whole a fairly positive canvass. Lots and lots of case work (mostly housing repairs). Unmesh and I would knock on a door and ask the resident if they wanted to speak to one of their local Councillors about any issues and if they said yes, we would grab the nearest Councillor, then move on to the next door.

Most of us were using the Labour Party mobile telephone app "Doorstep".  Names and addresses to visit are downloaded to your phone and you can input and upload any information in real time. It is much better than the old paper based system but I find it is liable to crash and freeze from time to time (but the data seems to be not lost). Probably my phone at fault.

I had a fascinating chat with one resident about the religious symbols on her front door (see top of collage next to xmas wreath - another religious symbol of course) who explained they were about bringing blessings to the local community.

Cllr Simon Rush asked one resident what he would like to see politically and was told "get rid of this Tory government". Agreed!

I was surprised to find door numbers in one terrace street jumped from 28 to 36? While I asked the resident why this was? I was told "The Luftwaffe"( it had been bombed during the war and less homes were built to replace those destroyed).

Interestly I came across, yet again, a number of residents who had previously been identified as Conservatives or "Against Labour", who now said they would vote Labour in a future election and the only people who said they wouldn't, were those who said they don't vote in elections. We need to find ways to win these non voters over.

After the canvass we had a quick drink at the Black Lion, then I cycled back home for a late Keto Brunch.

West Ham Labour informal social with Lyn Brown MP

Just back form a very pleasant evening with comrades from West Ham at the Black Lion pub in Plaistow (one of the oldest in Newham). Our local MP Lyn Brown was there and a wide mix of members enjoying drinks and pre Labour Party conference gossip.

Since both local Labour Parties in Newham are currently suspended this gathering was entirely informal and apologies to any members who did not receive an invite. We hope to arrange the next social in late October at a local community centre and organise food and entertainment.

Elwy Valley Walk

Off message but over Easter, Gill and I went back to North Wales to see my Mum for her 81st birthday (our Christmas visit has also been cancelled when we caught Covid) and visit other family members.

During the day we would go for walks and this 5 mile circular in the Elwy Valley was marvellous. Plenty of up and down's, great views and hardly any other walkers.

Unfortunately the modern Ordinance Survey Pathfinder guide  for the area does not appear to have this walk listed in it anymore. Check out this link on the my OS website "route" for a map of walk but watch out that the right of way footpaths have been slightly changed for parts of the route, so follow what the actual signs indicate rather than your GPS.

Start in the public car park by the old bridge in Llanfair Talhaiarn. The guidebook warns that you should not attempt this walk in misty weather. We finished the walk with an outdoor drink at the Black Lion. The food looked lovely. Next time. I will post and link further photos on Facebook

"On the knocker for Labour" in Custom House with Lyn Brown MP & Unmesh Desai AM

This afternoon I went out door knocking with our MP, Lyn Brown and our East London Assembly Member, Unmesh Desai.

We split into 2 teams. One led by local Councillor, James Beckles, with Party activist John Morris and the other by myself and activist Martin Warne.

It was cold but dry. I was using the Labour Party doorstep app so did not speak to that many residents but it was clear from feedback that we had significant support for Labour but a few had reservations. Our former leader, Jeremy Corbyn was brought up as a reason by some why they lost faith in Labour as a potential alternative government  but it was good that Keir Starmer was getting positive comments

But the only whelming reaction was that our residents were pleased that we were there knocking on their doors in December, listening and talking to them about their concerns.

Afterwards some of us went for a drink in the historic Black Lion pub in Plaistow and we shared some sea food from the local stall. The pub was busy with West Ham FC fans, who were obviously happy with the home win over Chelsea FC.

I had a little bit of  jellied eel, which was tasty but has a very strong flavour (the jelly puts me off) so I stuck to the pint of prawns and crab sticks.

West Ham Ward Surgery Doorstep

This evening I went on a ward doorstep Councillor surgery with my colleague, Cllr John Whitworth. We were joined by our GLA  Assembly member Unmesh Desai.

Pretty positive response for Labour. We had 49 contacts (using Labour doorstep app).

Afterwards we went to the Black Lion pub for a "debrief" and by coincidence met up with Newham Council Cabinet members. Afterwards, some of us went for a mixed grill shared between 2 and some Gurkha beers at @aromasfoods. Yum.

Is it time for a Progressive Alliance to defeat the Tories? Newham Compass with Neal Lawson & Sian Berry

While a very, very worthy aim I don't think it will work nor is it necessarily the right thing to do. What about a progressive alliance within the Labour Party instead?

But I hope to attend and listen to the arguments.

July 19th - Pension Board, LAPFF AGM, UNISON HAB, West Ham Labour GC (Sarah Jones MP Shadow Minister Housing)

Belated report on a busy Labour movement day last Thursday 19 July.

I started the day with a quarterly meeting of the London Borough Tower Hamlets Pension Board as an UNISON appointed representative.

The £billion plus fund is doing well and we are planning to try and safeguard very significant financial improvements against any possible future stock market crash.

Afterwards I went to the AGM of the Local Government Pension Fund Forum (LAPFF) in Westminster with my Newham hat. I was late due to the Tower Hamlet clash but appreciated the touching tribute at the meeting to the former forum Chair, Cllr Kieran Quinn, who died unexpectedly late last year.

Kieran was a proper working class socialist who had a traditional grassroots trade union background but was also an effective Council leader, a tolerant and decent man who wanted to bring about change for the better. He is missed.

After LAPFF I went to my UNISON Housing Association Branch in Holloway to speak to staff and sign stuff as branch secretary. A member of our small team is now also a London Labour Councillor and Deputy Cabinet member for housing!

In the evening there was the General Committee meeting of West Ham Labour Party. We had Shadow Housing minister, Sarah Jones MP as our guest speaker.

Sarah gave a great speech and Q&A. She reported on the really welcome change in public opinion polls towards housing issues and that Labour policy is now 12% ahead of the tories (like the NHS).

Our West Ham MP, Lyn Brown, also joined in with the Q&A.

Afterwards a few of us retreated to the nearby garden of the historic Black Lion pub to rehydrate after a very long and hot day.

West Ham in blossom.

Off message. While out campaigning yesterday in the sunshine I could not help admiring and taking pictures of the gorgeous looking blossom on the surprisingly high number of trees that line our streets and green areas. You probably just don’t notice the trees that much at other times of the year.

Afterwards we met up in the Black Lion in Plaistow for a drink and a natter in the beer garden sitting amongst very happy West Ham United FC supporters (they had just beaten Sunderland at home 1-0)
