Ed Balls in Newham - Save Free School Meals

Labour leadership Candidate Ed Balls, visited a Newham School yesterday and he talks above about the threat to free school meals. Hat-tip thingy Labourlist.

Why should I be paying for the free school meals for my neighbours kids?. The guy has a BMW. I am sure with all the money saved he can buy a bigger BMW at my expense.

I have no problem with poor people getting school meals, but I resent having to pay for school meals for the well off.

Hi anon
Rather selfish logic I think? I suppose therefore if someone has a beat up beamer you would expect him to pay more for his children’s schooling or NHS treatment as well?

We have to tackle poverty and break the cycle of deprivation - free school meals for all in a borough like Newham is one of the very best ways.

How is it selfish to ask whether free school meals are being correctly targeted? As with all benefits, free school meals are funded by taxpayers who have a right to see that such benefits go to those that need them, not those who cheat the system.

And how does giving all children free handouts "break the cycle of deprivation" exactly?

Hi Anon,

how do you cheat a system where everyone gets free school meals? Extra dumplings another splash of gravy?
Also if you are complaining that the 'better off' will be getting the benefit then presumably they are working and paying their taxes just like you. Just because you are on say the median wage doesn't mean you can't do with a little extra help from the social wage.
Also of course when every kid gets them there's no stigma. I remember there was when I was at school.

Such a scheme does not exist. The original point clearly refers to the current situation.

"Also if you are complaining that the 'better off' will be getting the benefit then presumably they are working and paying their taxes just like you"

This doesn't exactly answer the question regarding "breaking the cycle of deprivation" - the "better off" as you put it don't need help paying for school meals and the money should be spent on those who need and deserve it.

Hi Anon,

there have been schemes where all kids get free school meals. There was one in Hull until the Liberals ditched it. My mistake if I thought this applied in these cicumstances.
And again just becaue your're on the average wage or more doesn't mean you can't do with help from what is the social wage.
You really do sound like you think you're the only one who pays taxes.
