The desperate race to be the Royal Docks best loser – Newham Tories or the CPA?

By last night I had recovered from my very severe bout of "man flu" (which of course I had most stoically endured) so I went off after work to help out the Labour Campaign in the Royal Docks by-election.

At first I was given a local leaflet round to delivery. Which went OK apart from last road since on the map it insisted that there were 13 homes to be delivered but I could not find a single letter box? Lisa our ace local organiser was very understanding.

Later I went out with a canvass team with Cllrs Pat Murphy, Pearson Shillingford and Amarjit Singh. Apart from the unpleasant experience of bumping into Alan Craig from the CPA it went very well. The CPA candidate was with him (see right) and she seemed friendly enough. Craig himself just glared at us from a communal balcony.

The Tories and the CPA (the so-called “Christian People’s Alliance”) are currently fighting a rather bitter war about who really is the No 2 contender in this election. I came across a new Tories leaflet last night which referred to the May 2008 GLA election when the Tories came second to Labour. While the CPA has a practically identical graph on their leaflets which claims to show they are first! While I obviously hate to support the Tories their version is accurate while the CPA can only be seem to be telling porkies. They clearly suggest that they actually came first in the area in 2006 when plainly they did not? The leaflet actually refers to the result in neighbouring Canning town South ward which shares the same post code. Most electors will not know this.

Now on the face of things these things "happen" (not the Labour Party of course he says with his tongue firmly in his cheek!) and that you could well argue that worse things happen in local politics. However, the CPA uniquely claims to be better morally than the rest of us “The Mayflower Declaration is a statement of our Christian Democratic values and philosophy. It is a CPA national party document but we apply its basic principles to our work here in Newham. It shows how we seek to apply Christian inspiration to our politics in theory and in practice”. By printing blatant untruths?

It is interesting mind that in 2006 election in Royal Docks the current Tory candidate Neil Pearce came last out of all the losing Tories? I wonder why? The best news last night was that he has republished his infamous “Vinnie Jones” photo in his latest newsletter. This time in colour and with arms folded! Excellent stuff! Even if I have lost a bet.

It is also interesting that 3 months ago that Steve Brayshaw was not even a member of the Labour Party - No?

The leaflet actually refers to the result in neighbouring Canning town South ward which shares the same post code.

The same canning town that today permissions was granted for the £3.7bn Canning Town and Custom House regeneration masterplan. Some 422 homes will be for private sale and 227 "affordable'' housing.
After slagging Boris off for affordable housing I am sure this makes you happy.

Royal Docks should be so lucky.

Hi Anon 1-4
1. Maybe
2. Wrong
3. Still Wrong
4. You know this is deliberately misleading and untruthful. The plan has nothing to do with Craig who has constantly opposed development. I am concerned about the number of private homes for sale compared to "affordable". How many for affordable rents? There may be good reasons which I will have to find out about.

Royal Docks will be very lucky to have a Cllr such as Steve.

Let's see this last Tory leaflet!

I look forward to seeing BOTH. As John has slagged off the Tories leaflets and the CPA it will be interesting to see Mr Brayshaw.

See Labour are yet again being investigated by the police.Quelle Surprise.

Lewisham police are investigating a campaign leaflet published on behalf of two London Labour Party byelection candidates to consider if it transgresses electoral law. The leaflet, which appears to have been distributed on polling day during the recent campaign for Lewisham Council's Downham ward, claimed:

Our exit polls show: the BNP winning in Downham. It's more important than ever to VOTE LABOUR TODAY

Lewisham has confirmed that its returning officer has passed the leaflet to the police, who are looking into any breach of the 1983 Representation of the People Act. This sets out restrictions relating to the use of or reference to exit polls before an election is complete.

Actually, Steve's "priorities" are fairly interesting (taken from his website):

My priorities for Royal Docks are real changes that make a difference:
Action: Remove John knights factory smell
Action: Remove the nuisance parkers around CityAirport
Action: Reduce overcrowding on the Docklands Light Railway
Action: Increase Council-funded CCTV in Royal Docks
Action: Relocate pedestrian crossing, West Silvertown DLR
Action: Better bus services connecting Gallions Reach
Action: Noise insulation for local schools

[Not a word on how he's going to do this]

My approach to community issues:
Issue: Crime in Britannia Village
Action: I set up the Britannia Village Neighbourhood Watch
Result: Less crime

Issue: Flytipping
Action: Established regular Councillor Walkabouts, taking pictures of rubbish
Result: Rubbish removed

Issue: Nuisance parking around Royal Victoria Dock
Action: Collected evidence for the Police
Result: Police wrote to the offenders, offending stopped

The CPA and Tories may well be fighting amongst themselves for second place, but Steve seems to be campaigning against the sitting Labour councillors and the Mayor.

Why else would he be pointing out all the things they've failed to achieve in the 3 years (7 years in the case of the Mayor) that they've been in office?

Is there less crime in BV as a result of Steve's efforts? Doesn't this need to be evidenced?

Regular Councillor walkabouts???? Sarah Ruiz, Vic Turner and I did all this when we were councillors for the ward (I can "evidence" this as I still have the paperwork). What's so new about that? And it's shameful that the two current Labour councillors in the ward didn't establish such walkabouts?

John,
When and where have Tories proposed a second runway for City Airport as claimed in Steve's election material?

Hi Anon
It’s a 4 page newsletter?
Hi Mike
So you are not against Steve, but the mayor and existing Labour Cllrs? So vote 4 Steve?
Hi Mike 2
I understand that a response to Pearce’s leaflet will be made soon!

As you confirm that Steve is standing against the current Labour Councillors and the Mayor, if I still lived in the ward, I'd think seriously about it. :)

I was asking when and where the Tories proposed a second runway for City Airport.

John, John, John
"Royal Docks will be very lucky to have a Cllr such as Steve."
Don't you mean "Wales" as he pulls the strings of all his Muppet Cllr's.

My way or the highway Weasel Wales?? Thats who Royal Docks will get if they vote Muppet Brayshaw.
